Salary/Position Classification

  • $46,000 to $49,000 Annual, Dependent on Experience, Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)
  • 40 hours per week
  • This position works onsite at UND Grand Forks, ND campus

Purpose of Position

Reporting to the Environmental Health & Safety Manager, this position is responsible for the management of all life safety related programs at the university, for general safety of employees and students and the prevention of fire dangers, including, but not limited to, building inspections, AEDs inspections and maintenance, fire equipment maintenance, and accident investigations; providing leadership as necessary to coordinate existing University Safety Programs and the development of new Programs. This individual shall provide supervision to and work directly with student safety assistants and provide training of safety programs at the University as well as all other related duties as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages the Life Safety Program for the University
    • Performs annual inspections and maintenance of fire prevention equipment (suppression systems and portable fire extinguishers) located throughout the University.
    • Performs the annual inspections of university buildings, completes inspection reports and requests for repairs or corrections.
    • Performs surveys of laboratories and facilities to ensure adherence to safety regulation and procedures.
    • Coordinates required fire alarm and other functional tests and assists with practice drill evacuations. Reviews fire and life safety systems with Fire Marshall’s office and local inspectors to ensure legal and safe systems.
    • Performs the annual inspections on the AEDS, Fire Extinguishers and First Aid kits throughout campus.
    • Ensures that the monthly inspections are completed on the AEDS, Fire Extinguishers, Blue Lights and First Aid kits throughout campus.
    • Conducts independent fire inspections to ensure fire and life safety code compliance.
    • Responds to college emergencies and closures including adverse weather to secure buildings, furnishings, and fixtures to prevent damage or operational problems.
    • Maintains appropriate records as required.
    • Maintains an up-to-date working library of International National Fire codes.
    • Maintains the fire safety log and provides documentation for the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act.
    • Responsible for Life Safety Inspections including, but not limited to, Fire Extinguishers, Eye Wash/ Shower Stations, Confined Spaces and Hoist inspections.
    • Develop or support development and implementation of formal employee training regarding all Safety programs with an emphasis on life safety, fire prevention, and correct handling techniques and MAQ for chemicals, toxins, and hazardous materials on the University
    • Demonstrated expert knowledge of Life Safety standards/practices and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Assist department managers with the duties associated with Training, Hazardous Materials, Radiation, and Biological activities
    • Performs Fire Extinguisher training as requested.
    • Assist with chemical, radioactive and bio-hazardous waste collection, storage, and disposal.
    • Assist with inventory for chemical, radioactive, and biological operations
    • Assist with hazardous waste reduction and recycling efforts.
    • Assist with annual testing and certification of laboratory fume hoods.
    • Assist with laboratory inspections for safety and security issues. 
  • Provides consultation and feedback regarding activities and projects as they are related to safety requirements for the University
    • Responds to general questions and concerns for all safety related issues.
    • Provides guidance and documentation to questions related to fire safety.
    • Responds to concerns related to building codes.
    • Advanced experience in the practice and implementation of quality improvement concepts, methodologies and tools, and the importance of data performance improvement and dashboards
    • Provides consultation concerning building or process planning.
    • Represents and chairs Committees for Department as required/ necessary.
    • Assist with communication and coordination of local regulatory agency representatives as needed. 
  • Supports the mission of the Office of Safety
    • Development and implement policies, procedures, and programs relating to the Office of Safety.
    • Provides advisory services to management and administration.
    • Assist with emergency responses.
    • Helps maintain office files and documentation.
    • Perform safety sweeps, safety policy audits and reviews.
    • Generating and delivering safety related training materials.
    • Responsible for continuous improvement of the University Safety System.
    • Tracking and reporting key performance indicators and taking action as required.
    • Other duties as assigned. 
  • Coordinates the activities of Safety Assistants (Part-time and Students)
    • Provides essential training to Safety Assistants prior to their execution of job duties.
    • Provides oversite to Safety Assistants performing duties essential to the Office of Safety Programs.
    • Assist with the management of daily schedules of Safety Assistants.
    • Ability to assume responsibility for managing and updating existing health and safety programs, projects, and tasks and assign those tasks. 

Required Competencies

  • Must pass physical and wear a respirator.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and move over 100 lbs.
  • Basic computer knowledge Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Work well with others (staff, faculty, students).

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Professional experience working in a safety-related field
  • CPR/First Aid trainer or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years college as related to Fire safety, safety, STEM fields, engineering, or physical science
  • Experience and/or education in chemistry, fire safety, security, or laboratories
  • Chemical safety, use of monitoring equipment, HazMat experience
  • Three years of directly related work experience
  • Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS)
