Salary/Position Classification

  • $51,600-$53,600 annual, Exempt
  • 40 hours per week
  • This position will work onsite the Grand Forks, ND campus.

Purpose of Position

The Senior Study Abroad Specialist helps support the Director for Career Engagement’s strategic vision for growing experiential learning opportunities across the campus community. This role provides leadership, oversight of all study abroad programs, including both semester and yearlong, as well as short-term programs, like UDP as well as the day-to-day guidance for study abroad staff members and supports the execution of essential administrative processes that ensure smooth and compliant program operations. Additionally, this role is responsible for developing, coordinating, and supporting short-term, faculty-led international programs that align with institutional goals for global engagement. This position serves as a key resource for faculty, guiding them through the proposal, planning, risk management, and implementation processes to ensure high-quality academic and cultural experiences for students. By collaborating with campus stakeholders and international partners, the senior specialist enhances global learning opportunities and promotes access, inclusion, and academic integration in education abroad.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Study Abroad Program Management, Advising, and Promotion
    • Advise students, staff, and faculty on the study abroad experience with a focus on specific UND schools and colleges
    • Coordinate with the International Center on incoming student exchanges
    • Collaborate with UND partners to facilitate academic, financial and risk management components of study abroad
    • Lead curriculum integration initiatives
    • Support Pre-Departure Orientation programming
    • Provide oversight and event management in collaboration with the SASCE Marketing & Communications team and the Director for Career Engagement
    • Participate in classroom presentations and other campus outreach opportunities as needed
    • Participate in site visits at potential host institutions 
  • Study Abroad Team Supervision and Administration
    • Supervise, mentor, and annually review professional staff and student workers
    • Coordinate internal and external assessment reports in collaboration with the Director for Career Engagement
    • Serve as primary contact for campus and international partnerships and affiliates
    • Review and plan budget for Study Abroad with Director for Career Engagement
    • Coordinate RFP process for all study abroad-related endeavors
    • Manage and coordinate billing processes with campus partners
    • Oversee annually review of existing MOUs and partnerships with International Center 
  • Faculty-Directed Program Management
    • Lead recruiting efforts for short-term faculty programs including hosting various events and workshops to create awareness and interest amongst faculty and staff
    • Create and present faculty director training
    • Lead program development efforts
    • Review and select faculty and travel service provider proposals
    • Connect faculty and approved travel service providers for program design and itinerary
    • Provide Pre-Departure Orientation for students, staff, and faculty participating in Faculty-Directed Programs
    • Collaborate with UND departments to complete required documents 
  • Professional Development and Other Duties as Assigned
    • Assist with campus-based programs, activities and functions planned and facilitated within the Experiential Learning Center, and other areas in the SASCE unit as applicable
    • Engage in and represent UND Study Abroad in local, regional, and national professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge relative to key duties
    • Represent Study Abroad on university committee service and/or other leadership opportunities
    • Perform duties as assigned by Director for Career Engagement , Vice Provosts, and Provost

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5 years of experience in program coordination in a study abroad office or similar area
  • Experience studying, interning, or working abroad
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in any field
  • Experience working in a higher educational setting advising students and/or faculty
  • Experience with management software systems (e.g. PeopleSoft, Via TRM, etc.)
  • Experience developing and managing faculty-directed programs
