Salary/Position Classification

  • $58,800+ dependent on experience, annual, exempt
  • 40 hours per week
  • Following successful completion of a six-month probationary period, a hybrid work schedule may be considered.

Purpose of Position

The Budget & Planning Analyst supports the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences by performing budgeting, financial reporting, analysis, and accounting functions to ensure effective stewardship of state, tuition, and clinical resources. The role provides financial insight to SMHS leadership and departments to support academic, operational, and statewide health sciences initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities

Budget Development & Monitoring

  • Assist departments in developing annual needs-based budgets
  • Provide historical analysis of expenditures to support future funding needs and planning
  • Monitor spending patterns and identify budget variances requiring leadership review
  • Enter and verify budget data in UND’s budget module  

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare monthly and annual financial reports for SMHS leadership
  • Review financial transactions in UND systems
  • Assist with reporting needs for accreditation, audits, legislative reviews, and institutional requirements
  • Maintain excel based monthly fund report for departments
  • Monitor departmental budgets throughout the year for appropriateness and compliance with UND policies
  • Conduct financial analysis to support SMHS leadership in decision making 

Accounting & Payroll Transactions

  • Review and process accounting transactions including journal vouchers, journal entries, deposits and PCard reconciliations
  • Review payroll forms and assist with corrections (JDCs, PRCs, retros and add pays)  

Process Improvement & Administrative Support

  • Identify opportunities to improve financial workflows and processes
  • Support SMHS departments with training, guidance, and best practices in financial processes
  • Complete various ad hoc analyses or projects assigned by the Administration & Finance leadership team
  • Attend job-related training sessions provided by UND 

Required Competencies

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office software including Work and Excel applications
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skill
  • A commitment to working with high professional standards of ethics and confidentiality
  • Ability to multi-task and operate in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to problem-solve and work well under pressure.
  • Ability to master various computer processes quickly.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in business administration, finance, accounting or related field
  • Minimum one year of financial and budget management experience
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of financial and budget management experience
  • Data analysis functions of Excel, including pivot tables, what-if scenarios, etc.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Finance & HRMS, Jaggaer and other NDUS financial systems
