General Information:
James Madison University (JMU) School of Nursing (SON) invites applications for a 12-month, full-time appointment beginning August 1, 2026. This is an Academic Advisor position that is AP Faculty at the rank of Instructor. The School of Nursing offers CCNE-accredited Baccalaureate, Master’s, and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs. Duties and Responsibilities:
This position provides student-centered academic advising grounded in NACADA guidelines, offering clear and accurate guidance on curricular requirements, academic policies, degree progression, and professional expectations. The advisor maintains a high level of accessibility and responsiveness to students, collaborates with faculty and campus partners, and engages in ongoing professional development to ensure advising practices remain current and aligned with best practices in nursing education.
• Provide high-quality academic advising to prospective and current nursing students.
• Advise an assigned caseload, monitor academic progress, maintain regular communication, and ensure timely access and responsiveness.
• Guide students in developing academic plans aligned with degree requirements, general education curriculum, academic policies, and professional expectations.
• Respond to advising inquiries from students and families through university advising communication channels.
• Connect students with campus resources, opportunities, and support services to promote progression, engagement, and timely degree completion.
• Collaborate with faculty, administrators, and campus partners to support advising, retention, and student success initiatives.
• Serve as an advising resource for faculty and staff and contribute to school- and university-wide advising efforts.
• Participate in first-year and transfer orientation, advisor training, recruitment events, and academic open houses.
• Maintain accurate electronic advising records and utilize university advising technologies and data systems.
• Assist in developing and updating advising materials and resources for students and colleagues.
• Engage in ongoing professional development related to academic advising and higher education best practices.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required
• Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs, nursing, or a related field.
• Experience advising undergraduate nursing students or students in a related field.
• Demonstrated professionalism, accountability, and commitment to student success.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to relate meaningfully to undergraduate students.
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to understand broader academic and institutional priorities.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
• Excellent time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
• Familiarity with national trends, standards, and best practices in academic advising and higher education.
• Experience using integrated student information systems and advising technologies.
Experience interpreting and communicating academic policies, degree requirements, and institutional procedures.
