Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Summer Orientation Counselor will be primarily responsible for the training and supervision of the Orientation Leader team during May and June training, as well as June First Year (overnight) and Transfer (one day) Orientation sessions. Counselors will work with the Assistant Director and Student Coordinators of New Student Programs to coordinate and implement various programming aspects and logistics including evening activities, UMW Live informational skits, and supervision of Orientation Leaders during on-call time. Counselors will also be responsible for post-programming assessment efforts that will take place in the month of July.

This positing will fill multiple openings.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications

  • Ability to establish rapport with students, support students, and challenge students when needed.
  • Create effective personal and professional relationships with students while maintaining an advisory role.
  • Tactfulness, confidence, and maturity are essential especially when working with students.
  • Communication skills (written and verbal), listening skills, and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility, openness, and willingness to consider alternative ideas and suggestions.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple ongoing projects as well as track the activities of many student staff members at one time.
  • Ability to problem solve.

 

Required Experience:

  • Some experience working with First-Year or Transfer students.

 

Required Education:

  • 1st year of graduate school

Additional Considerations:

  • Understanding of student engagement, student development, and event planning.
  • Some experience working with First-Year or Transfer students.
  • Willingness to participate in early morning and late-night programming.
