Department Summary

The Office of Budget and Planning of UNT-Dallas facilitates the optimal use of university financial resources and provides timely, useful budget information to the University community and its stakeholders. The purpose of the Office of Budget and Planning is to assist the University administration with guidance in decision-making, financial planning, and properly managing the annual operating budget. We are determined to provide resource planning to enhance the concepts of budget and planning for all departments to ensure that all staff/faculty are financially aligned with the University goals and policies. 

Position Overview

The Associate Budget Director is responsible for providing support for the budget and financial planning activities of the University of North Texas at Dallas stakeholders including all divisions, Schools/Colleges, and department budget users. General responsibilities include resolving day-to-day financial issues to ensure smooth operations and assisting the Budget Director in all aspects of preparing, reviewing, monitoring and making projections for the UNT Dallas annual operating budget. The Associate Director uses a collaborative and consultative approach to working effectively across stakeholder groups to address financial opportunities and challenges for areas of responsibility and the University. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field and three (3) years of related professional experience; or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to effectively and efficiently contribute in a team dynamic with a wide range of constituencies across departmental lines to accomplish the identified goals of the department and University. Ability to work independently and initiate and create new, original material. High-level of proficiency using Excel and other spreadsheet software; organizing and reporting on large volumes of data and maintaining complex spreadsheets. Strong organizational, problem-solving and decision-making skills with proven ability to prioritize, organize, negotiate, coordinate and complete projects according to established time frames. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals at all levels of the institution.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field. Experience in Peoplesoft, Cognos, and/or Axiom. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial modeling tools.

Job Duties

  • Resolve budget related issues and develop and implement continuous process improvement and best practices within the budget office and for all university departments and budget users. This includes including identifying areas of risk or opportunity and making recommendations to mitigate any unfavorable outlook.
  • Provide supervision to the budget analyst including defining job duties, setting performance development plans and goals, conducting annual performance reviews and assisting with the implementation of organizational and operational decisions.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for annual budget process software, including developing and generating Axiom reports, testing, and troubleshooting issues.
  • Lead budget training for the campus, including the development of original training materials and the delivery training to the campus, including Axiom, ABA, and Cognos training.
  • Manage campus budget to date report distribution, including the maintenance of the distribution list and the scheduling the distribution of monthly automated budget reports to all campus budget users.
  • Prepare routine State financial reports, including Legislative Appropriation Request schedules, ABEST USAS recon, and ABEST performance measures.
  • Manage the annual year end budget roll forward process and ensure correct fund balances.
  • Assist the Budget Director in managing and evaluating the overall planning and coordination of the Budget Office to assure compliance with sound budgeting/accounting standards and practice and with applicable policies, regulations and laws.
  • Conduct financial analyses, including forecasting and variance analysis, to support institutional planning and decision-making. Identify financial trends, risks, and opportunities to enhance resource management.
  • Assist with all phases of the university’s annual budget cycle, including planning, development, implementation, and monitoring. Take a lead role in extracting, consolidating, and analyzing financial data to support the creation of comprehensive budget presentations for executive leadership.
