Department Summary: The Stravitz-Sanyal Liver Institute of Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking a PET/CT Technologist to join its world-renowned team of Hepatologists, researchers and imaging experts in changing the landscape of liver and metabolic diseases through research. The candidate will have the ability to engage in translational molecular research imaging at our new facility to include a state-of-the art research PET/CT scanner and equipment, and GMP radiochemistry laboratory using traditional and novel radiopharmaceutical biomarkers. The successful candidate will have experience in general PET/CT imaging, imaging protocols, PET/CT safety, and contrast administration. The PET/CT Technologist will capture and process human research clinical images for the Imaging Center while working within a specialized team utilizing specific hardware and software to deliver high-quality imaging data. They will report to the Manager of Research Imaging with regulatory oversight from the Nuclear Medicine Director. Anticipated start date for May-June 2026.

Core Responsibilities:

 •  Complete pre-scan quality control measures on equipment, and perform safety screenings/evaluations of all PET/CT participants prior to scanning

• Consults with PET/CT Director on participant devices and contraindications as needed

• Consults with SSI leadership and VCU Radiation Safety Officer for safety concerns or adverse events as needed

•  Perform quality control of PET/CT images and related documentation in a technical and research-intensive environment

•  Safely administer imaging agents to participants, monitoring for and following all reaction protocols per regulatory guidelines

•  Reviews PET/CT research protocols for radiopharmaceutical dosing, dosimetry and contrast appropriateness

• Safely handle radioactive materials and accurately measure residuals accordingly to facility policies

• Execute imaging scans according to research protocols and manage incidental findings in coordination with the PET/CT Director and Principal Investigators

•  Address research participants’ concerns, ensuring participant safety and comfort during scans

•  Ensure that the PET/CT rooms are kept clean, organized, and safe at all times

•  Communicate with scanner manufacturer on troubleshooting as needed

•  Assist in imaging data management, and segmentation of images from PET/CT investigations, including documentation and reporting of results

•  Obtain participant vascular access and participate in other operational tasks within the PET/CT suite as needed 

•  Ensure regulatory and accreditation compliance, including maintaining appropriate training, licensure and certification

•  Coordinate with staff and departmental leadership to streamline research workflow and operational efficiency

• Perform quality assurance procedures and implement process improvement changes as required

•  Serve as a member of the Imaging Safety Committee

Qualifications:

Minimum Hiring Standards:

•  Associate's degree in radiologic technology or related field from an accredited program recognized by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT)

•  Current active nuclear medicine certification through ARRT or the Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB)

•  Current active state licensure

•  Experience in radioactive training and handling radioactive materials

• Able to perform near radioactive materials

•  Current CPR certification

•  Must possess, utilize, and maintain knowledge of magnetic and radiation protection, safety, and current complex scanning protocols

•  Thorough understanding of and ability to practice principles of radiation safety to minimize risk to research participants, self, and others

•  Considerable knowledge of PET/CT policy and procedures, as well as the ability to interpret and apply information to daily work

•  Ability to think critically and use independent, professional, and ethical judgment in all aspects of work

•  Proven ability to work independently and to manage several competing assignments simultaneously

Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

•  CT Certification by American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT) certification is preferred

  • PET Certification through NMTCB is a plus

•  Prior training or certification in MRI modality preferred but not required. Must be willing to cross train in MRI suite if needed

•  Experience with research program development and implementation preferred but not required
