Department Summary: The Department of Radiation Sciences offers a B.S. in Clinical Radiation Sciences with concentrations in Nuclear Medicine Technology, Radiation Therapy, Radiography, and Diagnostic Medical Sonography. As Virginia's only B.S. program with content specific to all modalities, we provide the opportunity to prepare for the technical and professional demands of the 21st century.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Department Chair, the faculty contributes to the various areas of academia for the concentration and department based on the individualized workplan:
Teaching
-
Utilize appropriate teaching strategies in the professional program and core curriculum.

Develop course objectives/content in collaboration with Department Chair and in accordance with program goals.

Collaborate with the Program Director and faculty in the development of the radiation therapy concentration.
-
Assist the Clinical Coordinator to facilitate clinical education at the clinical affiliate sites to include occasional clinical sites and meetings with clinicians.

Contribute to the development and teaching of department courses.
-
Pursue excellence by utilizing appropriate, inclusive, and equitable teaching strategies.
-
Develop course objectives and content in collaboration with the Department Chair and in accordance with program goals.
-
Actively participate in course and curricular evaluation and development.
-
Assist with the master plan of education for the program.
Scholarship
Service
-
Serve and participate in departmental, school and university wide committee consistent with academic rank.
-
Serve in professional organizations consistent with academic rank.
-
Serve students via advisement on professional issues, maintain student records, and academic/professional advice.
-
Serve the community through organizational activities.
Other
-
Provide student data to analyze retention rates, credential pass rates, employer/student surveys, etc.
-
Update and/or revise program syllabi for changes needed to keep with current program and/or accreditation language/standards.

Review textbooks and materials for possible program adoption.
-
Assist in the evaluation and revision of the curriculum to reflect the needs of the community, graduates, and the profession.
-
Serves on program advisory committee.
-
Collaborate with the Department Chair and Program Director to recruit, interview, and recommend adjunct faculty.
-
Evaluate instructional methods, course objectives and teaching strategies utilized in core curriculum in accordance with program goals and accreditation standards.

Assist the Clinical Coordinator when needed with coordinating the clinical education component of program to include facilitating continued medical education opportunities.

Assist as a liaison between existing/potential clinical affiliates and the Program to:
-
maintain strong working relationships through effective and routine communication;
-
assure student’s clinical requirements are fulfilled;
-
onboard, train, and update affiliate educational supervisors/technologists regarding Department policy and the clinical assessment system;
-
adhere to and enforce the policies and procedures set forth by the various Handbooks (e.g., Student Handbook and Clinical Education Handbook); and
-
assist with Handbook updates.

Participate in the departmental admissions, outcome assessment, and recruitment activities.
-
Maintain confidentiality in accordance with departmental policy.
-
Maintain current knowledge of the discipline through continued professional development.
-
Effectively communicate and collaborate within and outside the Department in order to be an effective team player and achieve Department and Program goals.

Assume other duties as directed by Department Chair and/or Program Director.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
-
Bachelor's degree from a regionally or nationally accredited academic institution
-
Certification in the appropriate profession (e.g., ARRT)
-
5 years post-certification professional experience in radiation therapy
-
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in Health Professions-related field, or EdD
Salary Range: $80,000+ (commensurate with experience)
