Duties & Responsibilities:

The Operational Risk Analyst is responsible for the operational lifecycle of property and auto claims, management of the University Driver Program, and medical malpractice credentialing. The Analyst ensures that all university assets and personnel are accurately documented, scheduled, and covered under the Commonwealth’s Risk Management Plan, providing the foundational data for the University's strategic risk decisions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Claims & Data Administration

  • Evaluate and Process Claims: Review incoming property and automobile loss reports to determine eligibility and coverage applicability.

  • Investigate and Substantiate: Utilize multi-departmental databases and collaborate with internal stakeholders (e.g., Facilities, Police, Parking) to proactively collect supporting documentation.

  • Settlement Facilitation: Serve as a liaison between the University and the Division of Risk Management (DRM) and third party insurance carriers, facilitating settlement discussions and ensuring timely claim payments and closures.

  • System Administration: Serve as the primary administrator for the University Risk Management System and the State DRM portal, ensuring all data entries are timely, accurate, and audit-ready.

Compliance & Risk Transfer

  • Insurance Verification (COIs): Manage the inbound and outbound Certificate of Insurance process. This includes issuing proofs of coverage for University operations and conducting technical reviews of third-party vendor COIs to ensure compliance with contract terms.

  • University Driver Program: Administer the authorized driver database, including the processing of Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) checks and ensuring driver compliance with University policy.

  • Asset Schedule Integrity: Audit and maintain the comprehensive University Vehicle and Property Schedules; ensure all additions, deletions, and modifications are synchronized with the Commonwealth’s Risk Management Plan.

General Duties

  • Credentialing Support: Process Medical Malpractice credentialing requests for faculty and students, ensuring all documentation is verified and archived according to University standards.

  • Professionalism & Stakeholder Service: Act as the primary point of contact for departmental risk inquiries, providing exceptional customer service while maintaining strict confidentiality regarding sensitive claim data and University records.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • Strong computer skills with the ability to navigate complex database systems/RMIS portals.

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify inconsistencies or errors.

  • Solid written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex insurance requirements to non-expert stakeholders.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of experience in claims processing, insurance operations, or financial/risk analysis.

  • Experience working within a University or State Government environment.

  • Possession of (or progress toward) a recognized insurance designation such as Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Associate in Claims (AIC), or CPCU.

Salary Range: $50,000 - $60,000
