The Office of Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity (SAEO) is seeking a Testing Specialist and Administrative Assistant. This position supports the Testing Access Center by coordinating exam logistics, assisting students with scheduling exams, triaging testing concerns, communicating with faculty, and proctoring exams for students with approved accommodations. The position also serves as the primary receptionist for SAEO, providing front‑desk coverage,
greeting guests, answering phones, fielding initial inquiries, and supporting daily administrative operations. This role is ideal for someone who excels in a front‑facing, service‑oriented environment and can balance reception responsibilities with detailed administrative and testing‑center tasks. The role is in-person.
Testing Access Center Support
● Oversee receipt and retrieval of exams from and with faculty and academic departments.
● Communicate with faculty and students as unanticipated concerns arise during testing.
● Assist in proctor exams in the Testing Access Center, when needed.
○ Ensure each student completes their exam according to the professor’s instructions and their approved accommodations.
○ Maintain a quiet, secure, and distraction‑free testing environment.
○ Uphold the VCU Honor Code and ensure the security of all testing materials.
○ File reports with Student Conduct and Academic Integrity when academic integrity concerns arise.
○ Monitor the Testing Access Center in person and through CCTV systems.
○ Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information and exam materials.
○ Provide reader and scribe duties as needed.
Administrative Support
● Support general SAEO office operations, including responding to emails, answering phones, and assisting students, faculty, and visitors.
● Serve as the first point of contact in the reception area of the front office.
● Assist in coverage and back-up duties for the Office Manager at high volume times or as needed.
● Assist in monitoring the database for incoming accommodation letter requests.
● Assist in creating and processing accommodation letters for students.
● Assist with formatting exams that require conversion to alternative or accessible formats in alignment with student accommodations.
● Perform additional duties as assigned to support the overall functioning of the office.
Qualifications:
● Associate’s degree required.
● Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
● Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Excel, Google Suite, and database systems.
● Ability to work effectively in a diverse environment.
● Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree preferred (Psychology, Special Education, Rehabilitation, Counseling, Social Work, or related field).
● Experience working with a diverse student population in higher education.
● Experience providing testing accommodations in an educational setting.
● 1+ year of experience working with a diverse student population in higher education, including students with disabilities (internship or part‑time experience considered).
● Familiarity with accessible formatting or alternative testing processes preferred.
Salary Range: 35,000
