The Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center (VALRC) at VCU’s School of Education (SOE) seeks a Communications and Assistance Specialist who will contribute to a climate that supports all students, faculty, and staff. The Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center (VALRC) at VCU is a grant-funded center in the School of Education that provides adult education and literacy resources, publications, and training for adult education instructors and program managers throughout the state of Virginia. The VALRC’s mission is to equip the field of adult education and literacy with essential skills and resources through effective training, publications, curriculum design, and program development. We do this by ensuring that the field of adult education and literacy has the best available tools and training to help adult learners build a better future. The Communications and Assistance role is foundational to that mission.

The selected candidate will serve as the first line of communication and support for the state’s field of adult education by providing high-quality customer service through email, phone, and social media. This role also supports the VALRC by assisting with event planning and providing technical support for the online courses and training events that we deliver. This is a virtual position that will require occasional participation in in-person meetings and events.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality customer service through phone and email communications.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the VALRC main phone line, the GED® test help line, and the VALRC general email account.
  • Organize informal weekly phone and email communications reports for the VALRC team.
  • Maintain and update the Provider Directories of adult education programs on the valrc.org and gedva.com sites.
  • Support VALRC’s registration and evaluation processes by collecting and organizing participant information.
  • Provide technical assistance for our online training offerings, including monitoring registrations for courses, assisting trainers during synchronous online meetings and webinars, and supporting online facilitated courses by monitoring attendance and participation, in collaboration with the VALRC specialists.
  • Assist in planning and organizing in-person events, including monitoring registration information and assisting with event logistics, such as procurement of space, equipment, and catering.
  • Maintain open communication with the VALRC team and attend regular check-ins or meetings as required.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Superior customer support skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to function independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn how to utilize technologies that are necessary for the Center’s work, including navigating email systems, learning management systems, Wordpress, and collaborative working documents.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with adult education and literacy programs
  • Experience working in an academic setting
  • Postsecondary degree
  • Proficiency in spoken Spanish

Salary Range: $25.00- $27.00

FLSA Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

Hours per Week: Up to 29 hours per week.

ORP Eligible: No

Flexible Work Arrangement: Hybrid
