About this Position
The Academic Advisor serves as an advisor, mentor, coach, and ultimately champion, focused on the success of assigned students. As an Academic Advisor, you will truly own the accomplishment of your assigned students. Your coaching can be the "difference maker"- because of you, they will be ready to complete rigorous college courses and eventually graduate. The new Academic Advisor will advise a diverse population of students and provide holistic support, individually and in groups for an assigned caseload of students in the areas of academic advising, life skills development, student success development, career planning, and financial literacy. The Academic Advisor will interpret and explain university academic policy and procedure to assist students in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to graduation. The Academic Advisor will engage with our students to implement ongoing co-curricular activities to support our collaborative cohort model. The Academic Advisor will also collaborate with the community, faculty, and university partners to assist students with placement in internship and permanent employment positions in conjunction with Career and Professional Development. Overall, the Academic Advisor is expected to be proactive in assisting students in navigating the university at large and facilitating their holistic success.
The Academic Advisor is responsible for providing highly engaged, student-centered support to a caseload of undergraduate students. The Academic Advisor is incredibly well organized and strong communicators, interpersonally, technologically, and in writing. Finally, the Academic Advisor is not only capable in these many areas but also dedicated to performing these functions in full measure.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Success Coaching:
Perform in-depth analysis of student needs to provide effective information and guidance on academic-related issues such as major exploration, course selection and registration, degree requirements and exceptions, and transfer credit evaluation/substitutions.
Facilitate students' academic progress by maintaining regular contact with students within a caseload, monitoring each student's academic progress, and evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans. Make referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, specialized tutoring, extended or intensive assistance with career decisions or similar needs.
Coordinate and/or participate in the advising-related portion of new/transfer student and parent orientation sessions.
Encourage and guide students to define and develop realistic career goals which will be integrated into their academic action plan.
Counsel students on academic lack-of-progress probation/suspension.
Advise students on time management and schedule benchmarks.
Provide holistic support to students in the areas of financial literacy and connect them with the appropriate resources for detailed assistance in financial aid and scholarship opportunities.
Instruct Personal and Social Development and/or Academic Achievement Seminar courses for incoming students.
Student Development:
Assist students in learning the campus culture-the traditions, rituals, and practices that communicate how and why things are done at their school.
Implement innovative ways of encouraging and supporting the personal developmental needs of a diverse student population.
Provide students with proactive guidance on acclimating to their new undergraduate lifestyle and building supportive personal environments and best practices to facilitate their student's success.
Empower students to maintain effective connections to the University and its community of scholars.
Provide crisis intervention support and refers students to campus resources and community agencies for personal counseling as needed.
Empathetically provide encouragement, reinforce positive results through recognition, and recognize milestones of assigned students.
General Administrative:
Demonstrate a clear knowledge of university, college, and departmental academics policies and procedures while offering direction to students in their respective programs/majors.
Maintain students' academic files that include a record of the advising activity that takes place during each visit.
Plan, develop, and conduct retention-related workshops and sessions as required.
Assist in data compilation, statistical reports and correspondence, depending upon the area of assignment.
Initiate and maintain cooperative working relationship with a variety of individuals and
groups, including staff, student, faculty, university partners and off-campus community groups and partners to improve and promote student success.
Provide comprehensive service to students using effective communication techniques with various modes of technology.
Participate in on-going departmental training and cross-training to ensure an understanding of the college programs, curriculum, graduation requirements, polices, and procedures, and resources and services available to students, coordinating with staff in the areas of financial aid, registration and admission, and other enrollment management services. |

Serves as the primary communications and media relations contact for the institution. This role will help facilitate the implementation of OSUIT’s strategic marketing and communications plan, which includes media relations, promoting overall university strategy, aligning with OSU system communications teams, and reputation management. This individual will enhance OSUIT’s reputation with key internal and external audiences through their strategic communication skills. Primary responsibility for developing strategic communications plans, writing content for news stories, media advisories, releases, articles, institute communications, policy communications and crisis/issues communications. The individual should demonstrate self-direction, creativity and strategic thinking in finding new opportunities to showcase OSUIT. |
