About this Position

The Facilities Management Landscape Department is seeking a dedicated horticulture professional to provide leadership and hands‑on expertise in shaping the beauty and sustainability of the University’s landscape. This role plans, organizes, and leads a skilled staff team responsible for the development, care, and long‑term stewardship of campus grounds and other University‑owned properties.

Responsibilities span the full life cycle of landscape installation and maintenance, with a strong emphasis on managing a diverse and dynamic collection of plants within trial and demonstration gardens. The position applies horticultural knowledge to accurately identify plants, assess planting sites, evaluate plant health and nutritional needs, and implement proper care practices. Attention to detail, thorough recordkeeping, and a collaborative approach are essential to maintaining vibrant, welcoming, and educational outdoor spaces. Other related duties are performed as assigned.

On a 24-hour call to assist with emergencies such as storm damage and ice/snow conditions, and to monitor overtime work. Exposure to high levels of noise, offensive-smelling chemicals, extreme outdoor temperatures, and all types of inclement weather.

Working conditions will normally include moving about, lifting 50 lbs, digging, equipment noise, chemical smells, exposure to extreme outdoor temperatures, and all types of inclement weather.

Must use appropriate personal protective equipment as required (gloves, safety glasses, etc.). These items are not for personal use.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's

    Landscaping, horticulture, or related technical field.

    (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • One year of experience in grounds-keeping/horticulture/landscape related field.

  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

    Have before hire and maintain after hire, a valid driver's license. A valid driver's license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned.

    Obtain a Chemical Applicator's Pesticide license within one year of hiring date. Must maintain and keep the license current throughout employment. Strong leadership, supervisory, decision-making, and organizational skills.

  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

    Ability to multitask and coordinate projects through to completion. Knowledge and keen understanding of landscaping and turf installation and maintenance practices, theories, and principles.

    Must be able to work under minimal supervision. Advanced computer skills. Ability to understand and interpret chemical labels. Ability to operate grounds and landscape-related equipment. Ability to lift 50 lbs and work in inclement weather.

    Ability to become proficient in the use of "AiM" Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and the use of mobile technology. Must work safely and promote a safe environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's

    Horticulture, Entomology, Plant Soil Science. 

  • Five years of experience in grounds-keeping, horticulture, landscape, or related field. Proven leadership, supervisory, and management duties preferred.
