Who We Are

In Melbourne, water is essential to our way of life.

As caretakers for Melbourne’s water cycle, we care for water, life and land throughout Melbourne: both its people and its biodiversity.

Each time you drink from the tap, flush a toilet or kayak down the Yarra, we’re there. Primed and ready, quietly delivering some of the world’s cleanest water for over five million residents and wildlife that call Melbourne home, just as we have for over 130 years.

If you value making it count, diving in with curiosity, and doing what’s right, you're in the right place.

We are currently recruiting three Capital Initiation Officers. These newly created, ongoing positions are based across the following teams and locations:

Position 1: Peninsula Westernport team, based at the South East Regional Office in Bangholme.

Position 2: Werribee team, based at MW head office in Docklands.

Position 3: Maribyrnong team, based at MW head office in Docklands.

All three roles require frequent travel to various MW work centres and stakeholder meetings, a pool car will be provided.

In these roles you will help shape projects that make a real difference to our natural environment. These roles are graded level 5, offering $99,581 + Super.

We’re looking for three experienced project setup professionals to join Melbourne Water and help investigate, scope and shape and kick off projects across our waterways and catchments.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys getting into the detail of a project early, understanding and articulating what needs to be done, working through the challenges and bringing together the right people to develop a clear scope for delivery.

You’ll work across a varied portfolio of projects, generally valued between $100,000 and $1 million, with significant variety in their scale and complexity. Some projects can involve substantial works across the natural resource space, with a focus on waterway improvement projects, giving you exposure to interesting challenges and tangible outcomes.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll play an important role at the front end of the project lifecycle, taking projects from an identified need through investigation, scoping and design before they move into on ground delivery.

Your work will include:

  • Undertaking project investigation, scoping and design to clearly define what needs to be delivered.
  • Organising and coordinating projects to ensure requirements, constraints and stakeholder needs are understood upfront.
  • Working across projects ranging from approximately $100,000 to $1 million.
  • Managing projects with varying levels of scale, complexity and stakeholder involvement.
  • Building strong relationships with a broad range of internal and external customers and stakeholders.
  • Engaging with stakeholders including local councils, landowners and heritage bodies and various other agencies, depending on the project.
  • Partnering with our delivery teams downstream as scoped projects move into implementation.
  • Using information, asset and spatial systems to understand existing assets and inform project planning. Experience with ALTUS, Maximo and GIS would be beneficial.

About you;

You’ll bring strong project development skills and an ability to take a problem or identified need and turn it into a well-considered, practical project scope.

We’d particularly like to hear from people who have experience in areas such as:

  • Natural resource or environmental projects with a focus on waterways
  • Minor capital works or infrastructure projects
  • Project scoping, investigation and design
  • Asset management or maintenance environments
  • Coordinating multiple stakeholders and competing requirements
  • Working with councils, government agencies, landowners or other external stakeholders
  • Using ALTUS, Maximo or GIS, although experience with these systems is beneficial rather than essential

Just as importantly, you’ll be organised, curious and comfortable getting out there to understand a project rather than managing everything from behind a desk. This is a role where you can genuinely see the difference your work makes to the environment. You’ll help turn an idea into a well-scoped project, then have the satisfaction of seeing that work progress through our delivery teams and ultimately come to life. With three opportunities available, a diverse portfolio of projects and work that can range from relatively straightforward improvements through to larger and more complex natural resource works, there is plenty of opportunity to build your experience and make an impact. If you enjoy investigating problems, shaping solutions, working with a diverse range of stakeholders and seeing rewarding projects completed, we’d love to hear from you.
