The Opportunity

The Group Governance Services (“GGS”) team at Monash is a vibrant and diverse business unit, and is one of several specialist functions within the portfolio of the Vice-Chancellor and President. The GGS team is responsible for providing the secretariat for the University Council and the Academic Board, together with certain Council committees (Resources & Finance Committee, Executive Committee and Membership Committee), all of the committees of the Academic Board, and key controlled entities and joint ventures. It also provides governance advice and support to the Vice-Chancellor and Chancellor, ensuring that the Monash Group has consistent and appropriate governance that facilitates the delivery of desired results.

Monash is offering an outstanding opportunity for an experienced university/company secretary / governance professional to join the GGS team in a senior role. 

Reporting to the Executive Director, Governance, Risk and Policy who serves as the University Secretary, the Director, Group Governance Services will play a critical role in the provision of University and company secretariat services, acting as Deputy University Secretary and ensuring effective corporate governance and regulatory compliance. You will also be responsible for the conduct of elections for staff and student members of Council and the Academic Board. You will support the Executive Director in managing Council, committee and entity activities, including attending Council meetings and preparing relevant documents. You will ensure the alignment of the governance framework with the University’s strategic objectives and values. You will be an active contributor to the continuous development of governance policies and practice in accordance with the Group Governance Framework and promote corporate governance best practice. In all of this you will lead and manage, and be supported by, a high performing GGS team.

About you

This position requires deep expertise in university/company secretary and governance responsibilities, as well as some commercial legal practice experience in a reputable law firm. Qualifications in corporate governance are highly desirable. 

Dealing at the highest levels of the organisation, you offer outstanding stakeholder management and communication skills. You bring a proven ability to work collaboratively with University Council members, senior management and external stakeholders. This role requires a high level of maturity, gravitas, exceptional attention to detail, the ability to work autonomously, leadership and management skills, superior written communication skills and a highly ethical approach.
