The Opportunity
We’re looking for a technically skilled and service-oriented Senior Technical Officer to lead the day-to-day operations of ARAFlowCore – one of Australia’s top flow cytometry facilities. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who thrives in a lab environment, enjoys helping others with technical problem-solving, and has deep expertise in cell analysis technologies.
You’ll support cutting-edge research by managing high-speed sorters and analysers, assisting with experimental design, training users, and maintaining high standards in safety, documentation and compliance. You'll work with a diverse range of scientists, from students to leading clinical researchers, playing a key role in their success.

Monash University’s School of Translational Medicine (STM) is located within the Alfred Research Alliance precinct and is home to some of the most advanced medical research in Australia. STM brings together disciplines such as immunology, oncology, psychiatry, surgery and infectious diseases to turn scientific discoveries into real-world treatments.
ARAFlowCore, our flow cytometry platform, is a core part of this mission. We provide expert services to researchers across Monash University, the Burnet and Baker Institutes, and external clients. Our laboratories house some of the most advanced cytometry equipment in the country, including high-speed sorters and spectral analysers capable of detecting 40+ cellular markers at once. About you
You are an experienced technical officer or laboratory specialist with:
- A science or biomedical degree, or equivalent training and experience
- Hands-on experience with flow cytometry equipment – ideally both analysers and cell sorters
- Strong organisational skills and confidence managing lab operations independently
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for training users and supporting researchers
- A commitment to safety, compliance, and continuous improvement
You’ll also bring the ability to troubleshoot complex issues, manage technical documentation, and stay up to date with emerging technologies in the field.
Key responsibilities
- Operate and maintain flow cytometry instrumentation (sorters, analysers, cytometers)
- Train and support platform users, including students, staff, and external clients
- Coordinate laboratory safety, compliance (ISO9001), and standard operating procedures
- Manage bookings, staff schedules, and ensure smooth day-to-day platform operations
- Provide expert guidance in experiment planning, data analysis, and troubleshooting
