The Opportunity

The Faculty of Information Technology has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Research Engineer to join Action Lab, a centre of expertise for action-based research in communities and digital technologies. 

The Senior Research Engineer leads full‑stack design, development, and maintenance of scalable research platforms, aligning with Action Lab’s strategic goals. You will supervise a team of Research Engineers and collaborate closely with Research Fellows, students, staff members, community members, clinical populations and occupational groups.

As the successful candidate you will:

  • Have proven expertise with relational databases (PostgreSQL, Drizzle ORM, Prisma ORM) and non‑relational databases (MongoDB, Firebase)
  • Be proficient in complex schema design, indexing strategies, and optimizing query performance
  • Have demonstrable experience developing robust, scalable APIs using REST, GraphQL, tRPC, pub/sub systems and type-safe APIs leveraging TypeScript, tRPC, SuperJSON and schema-validation libraries (Zod, Arktype)
  • Have designed middleware for authentication, authorization, and security enforcement
  • Experience integrating APIs with AWS, GCP, or Azure cloud ecosystems.
  • Experience in open-source dietary assessment tools and health data platforms
  • Demonstrated leadership in planning, priority-setting, resource allocation, and delivering on deadlines
