The Paediatric Department is a multi-faceted unit with multiple areas of service delivery. This includes on-site inpatient services, as well as off-site Paediatric Community Care such as clinics run throughout Southern Metropolitan Adelaide.

Due to the unique proximity and working relationships, the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health has a strong focus on the clinical skills development for medical students, junior doctors and other services around SALHN to foster excellent care for children and young people across the organisation.

This vacancy presents an exciting opportunity to develop your skills and build relationships to support a variety of healthcare settings in secondary and tertiary settings.

About the role: 

The Department of Paediatrics is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated General Paediatric consultants with skills and experience to support these essential services. We have a strong preference to recruit Consultants who have some skills, or are willing to upskill, in the fields of Child Protection or Paediatric Diabetes. For those that require upskilling, Consultants will be supported to develop their skills in these areas during working hours over a 1–2-year period.  

Reporting to the Head of Unit - Paediatrics and Child Health, this role provides clinical services within Paediatric Medicine at Flinders Medical Centre and other SALHN sites. 

Duties for the role will include:

  • providing appropriate clinical care to Paediatric patients, including those with child protection concerns and vulnerabilities.
  • working as a consultant in the acute inpatient setting and outpatient setting, caring for acutely unwell children and children with long-term or neurodevelopmental needs.
  • Working as a Consultant in various areas of general paediatrics, with possible work in areas such as child protection and paediatric diabetes as directed by the head of unit.
  • providing appropriate direction and supervision to registrars, resident medical officers and interns
  • acting as a role model and mentor for medical students, registrars, resident medical officers, and interns

The Consultant Paediatrician is actively involved in teaching medical students and trainee medical officers and, where appropriate, Nursing and Allied Health.

Due to the dynamic nature of the services provided by the Paediatric Department in SALHN, it is essential that all consultants are willing to upskill and develop their skills in a variety of areas to support sustainable service delivery. 

About you:

  • Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent. Appropriate Specialist Qualifications and registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner with Specialist registration; or another qualification as defined in the SA Medical Officers Award.
  • Demonstrated high standard of clinical practice in Paediatric Medicine
  • Demonstrated professional integrity, leadership, and motivational skills.
  • Experience in a broad range of medical fields relevant to the practice of Paediatric Medicine.
