About the role

The Emergency Mental Health Nurse Consultant provides specialist mental health nursing assessment, risk management and intervention for children, adolescents and perinatal women in emergency settings. The Nurse Consultant delivers expert clinical guidance, supports staff, and drives quality improvement to ensure safe, coordinated mental health care.

Key duties of the role

  • Provide expert clinical knowledge and interventions in child and adolescent mental health nursing and urgent perinatal assessment.
  • Assess, plan, and implement care/appropriate service delivery options.
  • Directs the clinical care and de-escalation processes when involved in the management of patients during emergency codes.
  • Provide leadership and direction, and act as a mentor and resource person.
  • Provide knowledge in monitoring client care plans and clinical review programmes.

Skills and Experience

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Nurse by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia and who holds, or who is eligible to hold, a current practicing certificate. Must be enrolled in an approved Mental Health Course or hold a qualification in mental health practice.
  • Registered Nurses with at least 3 years post registration experience.
  • Demonstrated competence in delivering proficient and comprehensive mental health nursing.
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent mental health nursing health care issues and perinatal assessment.
  • Demonstrated mental health assessment skills.
