This appointment is temporary to replace an employee who is on parental leave. The incumbent is entitled to return earlier to their substantive position in accordance with the Fair Work Act 2009.


About Us  

Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn Education Limited (CACGEL) operates in the ACT and NSW, supporting 56 Schools and nine Early Learning Centres (ELCs). 

The Archdiocesan Schools Office provides a range of services to the system through four directorates including Faith in Learning, School Operations, Corporate Services and Governance and Strategy.

About the Role  

The School Counsellor provides expert support to promote mental health, student wellbeing, and positive engagement with school life. Through professional counselling services and targeted interventions, the role empowers students to navigate challenges, build resilience, and thrive both personally and academically. The School Counsellor contributes to a collaborative and student-centred culture, offering guidance and expertise that strengthens the school’s approach to wellbeing and supports a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.  

About the School

St Mary MacKillop College is Canberra’s largest secondary school, operating across two campuses. Years 7 to 9 are based on the Padua Campus (Wanniassa) and Years 10 to 12 are based on the St Peter’s Campus (Isabella Plains). MacKillop College is part of the Catholic Education, Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn (CECG), which operates 56 Catholic Systemic Schools and nine Early Learning Centres across ACT and NSW.

Qualifications and Eligibility   

  • Minimum of four years relevant post qualification practice experience.
  • Holds a degree in Psychology, Social Work, or Counselling.
  • Psychologists must be registered with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Social Workers must be registered or eligible for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
  • Counsellors must be registered members with either the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) or the Australian Counsellors Association (ACA).
  • Adherence to the association requirements with regards to: 
    • Supervision and professional learning, and
    • Annual maintenance of membership while working and provide evidence of membership to the employer.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Accreditation in accordance with Work Teach and Lead in Catholic Education Canberra and Goulburn policy.
  • Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration and Working With Children Check (WWCC).
  • Current Drivers Licence.
