The Opportunity
As a Lead Data Engineer within our Data & Analytics team, you'll play a key role in shaping and executing Cleanaway’s enterprise data and digital engineering strategy. You will lead the delivery of high-impact initiatives spanning data engineering, software development, reporting, analytics, and cloud platform engineering supporting business-critical outcomes across customer engagement, route optimisation, sales, pricing, and operational performance.
You’ll guide a team of engineers while collaborating closely with operations, commercial stakeholders, architecture teams, and external partners to deliver scalable, modern, cloud-native solutions that enable smarter, data-driven decision making across the enterprise.
This role combines deep data engineering expertise with modern software engineering capabilities and is ideal for a hands-on technical leader who enjoys building robust platforms, APIs, applications, and data products within a Microsoft Azure ecosystem.
Your core responsibilities will include:
- Leading the design, development, and optimisation of enterprise data platforms and software solutions within an Azure-based ecosystem
- Designing and implementing scalable cloud-native architectures using Azure services and Infrastructure-as-Code practices (Bicep/Terraform)
- Building and maintaining robust data pipelines, APIs, integrations, and application services supporting operational and analytical workloads
- Contributing to the development of modern web-based solutions and internal platforms
- Advising on architecture, engineering standards, and technical implementation approaches across data and software engineering domains
- Driving engineering best practices including CI/CD, automated testing, DevOps, observability, security, and code quality standards
- Contributing to enterprise-wide data architecture strategies and technical design decisions
- Ensuring team adherence to Cleanaway’s governance, documentation, security, and delivery standards
- Collaborating with business users and technology stakeholders to gather, analyse, and translate requirements into scalable technical solutions
- Mentoring engineers and fostering a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence
This is a strategic and hands-on leadership role, ideal for an engineering professional who thrives on solving complex problems and delivering scalable business value through data and technology.
About You
You are a forward-thinking, solutions-focused engineering professional who combines strong technical depth across data and software engineering disciplines with a passion for innovation and continuous improvement.
You’re energised by complexity, motivated by impact, and confident leading technical initiatives across both enterprise data platforms and modern application development environments. You can communicate complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders and are comfortable influencing architectural and engineering direction.
To thrive in this role, you’ll bring:
- A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field
- Strong experience designing and delivering enterprise-scale data engineering and software engineering solutions
- Deep expertise across Azure cloud services and modern data engineering platforms including Data Factory, Synapse, Databricks, Snowflake, and Data Lake technologies
- Strong software engineering capability using technologies such as C#, .NET, REST APIs, and modern frontend frameworks such as React
- Experience implementing Infrastructure-as-Code solutions using Bicep, ARM, or Terraform
- Solid expertise in SQL, ELT methodologies, dimensional modelling, and BI/reporting solutions
- Hands-on experience with Python or PySpark for data transformation, orchestration, and automation
- Strong understanding of modern engineering practices including CI/CD pipelines, Azure DevOps, Git-based workflows, automated testing, secure development, and observability
- Experience designing scalable, secure, and maintainable cloud-native architectures
- Proven ability to lead engineering delivery while balancing governance, operational sustainability, quality, and business outcomes
- Strong stakeholder engagement and mentoring capability with the ability to uplift engineering maturity across teams
