Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; weekends on a rotating basis & some extended hours as need


Job Summary: The Buyer I supports the formal competitive bid process, development of contracts, service agreements, leases and other written legal agreements under general supervision. Procures items or services in an assigned commodity area at the best total value. Obtains quotations and enters into negotiations with suppliers as necessary. Ensures compliance with University policies, guidelines, and the State of Alabama Bid Law.


Additional Department Summary: Oversees the operations of the Technology, Convenience, and Electronics areas of the Supply Store. Procures technology products, convenience items, and electronics for resale to retail customers and departments. Compares prices, negotiates with vendors, and creates purchase orders to obtain the best prices for inventory. Serves as part of the Supply Store management team with capability to act autonomously in making decisions. Opens and closes the Store as needed and rotates with other management team members to manage the entire store on the weekends. Performs specific operational functions in the computerized inventory management and point of sale system as needed.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher and some experience in procurement, purchasing, and/or buying.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Must be able to work on rotation to open, manage, and close the Student Center location on weekends.


Skills and Knowledge: Excellent interpersonal skills. Strong customer service skills. Excellent planning and organizational skills. Sound decision making skills. Working knowledge of personal computers. High level of independent thinking.


Preferred Qualifications: Extensive customer service experience. Experience in a retail environment that parallels the functions of this position.
