Job Summary: The Graduate Student Worker for UA Early College manages the evening and night operations of a residential community, student residents, and supervises community student peer coaches. The GSW reports directly to the Summer Programs Manager and the Assistant Director.

The Graduate Student Worker will be required to work at least 20 hours per week primarily between 5:45pm to 1:00am each; however, earlier hours may be required. Night, holiday, and weekend hours are required throughout the entire summer.

Duties include the following:

  • Lives in bedspace provided within UA Early College summer housing.
  • Directly supervises 4-5 student Peer Mentors
  • Conducts regular supervisory meetings, along with the Summer Programs Coordinator, to provide mentoring, motivation, and feedback to staff
  • Participates in Summer on Campus staff training to be held May 20th-22nd, 2026.
  • Partners with the Summer Programs Coordinator, as a student conduct hearing officer for the SOC community
  • Provides educational interventions and referrals when community living standards are violated 
  • Remains on-call, via phone, from 10:00pm to 6:00am daily to respond to issues, concerns, or emergencies
  • Monitors maintenance and facilities issues, completes administrative paperwork, and compiles reports
  • Facilitates health and safety inspections and building occupancy verification processes with student Peer Coaches
  • Attends weekly staff meetings with the Summer Programs Coordinator and Assistant Director

Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama Graduate student. Bachelor's Degree required. Must be able to live on-campus in UA Early College summer housing.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of assigned community. Schedules vary; night, weekend, and holiday hours will be required throughout the summer.

Must work at least 20 hours per week to maintain employment eligibility when completing a practicum, internship, or co-op.


Skills and Knowledge: Conflict management, excellent communication skills, excellent stress management, ability to work with students of all ages.


Preferred Qualifications: Students majoring in Secondary Education, Social Work, Psychology or related programs will be given priority consideration. Ability to interact and communicate with a wide range of people, work cooperatively on a team, identify and respond to the needs of a student population, maintain confidentiality, supervise student staff, and confront policy violations in an objective and consistent manner.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
