Job Summary: The Bike Shop Mechanic oversees maintenance and repairs of the Bama Bike Fleet and customer bikes, while assisting with Rental Center operations.


Additional Department Summary: The Bike Shop Mechanic provides excellent customer service for all patrons and guests. Sells, registers, and updates Bama Bike Rentals. Communicates with patrons professionally and effectively determines what service they require. Performs bike maintenance on UA community bikes. Takes notes of unusual situations/unresolved issues, and informs supervisor. Contributes ideas to make processes more efficient. Adheres to, and enforces all UREC policies and UA Student Code of Conduct. Attends all training sessions, workshops, and staff meetings. Dresses appropriately. Maintains confidentiality with all student and UREC information. Communicates the pros and cons of different types of bike equipment. Informs customers about local and regional biking areas. Maintains safe shop environment. Inspects equipment used for cycling. Maintains a clean workforce. Accounts for bike shop equipment and gear inventory. Maintains log sheets and gear inspection. Other duties as assigned.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama undergraduate student. Current CPR and Basic First Aid certifications.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Attends monthly staff trainings and meetings. Attends bike maintenance trainings.


Skills and Knowledge: Excellent customer service skills. Good organizational and communication skills. Ability to follow instructions and work independently with minimum supervision. Ability or interest to problem solve mechanical issues. Knowledge of general Outdoor Recreation services and offerings.


Preferred Qualifications: Prior knowledge of bicycle maintenance and repairs.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
