Job Summary: The Outdoor Recreation Associate provides administrative and customer service support for the Outdoor Recreation Rental Center and Climbing Facilities. Responsibilities include providing excellent customer service, outdoor equipment check-in/out and assisting members with loading/unloading of larger equipment rental items, answering questions about outdoor equipment choices and outdoor recreation areas, and assisting with bike shop transactions as needed.


Additional Department Summary: Enforce all University Recreation policies, rules, and regulations. Prevent, mitigate, recognize, and respond effectively to emergencies. Competently act during implementation of Emergency Action Plan. Respond to member inquiries and concerns, and initiate action for resolution. Inspect the facility on a daily schedule and immediately report any unsafe conditions and equipment to the supervisor on duty and Coordinator of Outdoor Recreation Programs. Complete records and reports as required and in a timely manner. Perform cleaning and maintenance tasks during shift for general facility upkeep. Maintain certifications as needed to meet the minimum requirements for employment. Actively participate in all required meetings and in-service training sessions. Complete additional duties as assigned. This position has opportunities to work in the bike shop, at the climbing wall, and leading Outdoor Recreation trips.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama student enrolled and continuing as a part-time or full-time student for the next academic year. Must be available to work 10-20 hours per week and able to work a flexible schedule to include some early mornings, nights, weekends and/or holiday hours as needed.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED certification; or ability to complete certification requirements upon hire (Required course is offered by UREC upon hire). Must be able to work outdoors in various types of weather. Must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment up to 50 pounds.


Skills and Knowledge: Self-motivation and ability to work cooperatively as part of a team. Willingness to learn and accept direction/feedback from peers and supervisors. An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures. Leadership and public relations skills. Decision-making skills.


Preferred Qualifications: Some experience with outdoor recreational activities. Some knowledge of outdoor recreation equipment. Experience in belay climbing instruction and/or belay certification. Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
