As part of its commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive work environment, UNICEF Sierra Leone is organizing a staff retreat which will serve as a platform for meaningful discussions and decision-making to enhance UNICEF’s organizational culture while also providing an opportunity for staff to connect in a non-work setting.

The retreat will create a space where staff engage fostering inclusivity and mutual respect; receive and discuss updates on HR policies, ensuring transparency and awareness and contribute to office-wide decisions that promote staff welfare and well-being.

Aligning with the theme of the retreat, the Staff Association requires a skilled and experienced facilitator with expertise in team building, to guide engaging discussions and activities. The selected facilitator will collaborate with the Staff Association Executive Committee (COSA Exco) and Management Team to finalize the retreat agenda, ensuring that it aligns with UNICEF’s core values of care, integrity, respect, accountability, and inclusion while fostering a cohesive and motivated workforce.

 

Purpose and Objectives

The objective of this consultancy is to engage an independent and impartial facilitator with proven expertise in organizing and leading team-building programs for a diverse and multicultural group of professionals. The selected facilitator will be responsible for designing and conducting the 2025 Annual Staff Retreat for UNICEF Sierra Leone.

The facilitator or facilitation team will play a key role in fostering active participation, open communication, and collaboration among staff. By encouraging engagement and dialogue, the retreat aims to strengthen teamwork and cooperation across all levels of the organization.

Working closely with the COSA Exco and Management Team, the Facilitator refine the retreat agenda and lead interactive sessions designed to achieve the retreat’s key objectives. These objectives include:

  • Enhancing workplace cohesion and unity.
  • Strengthen personal and institutional strategies for stress management and improved staff wellbeing.
  • Strengthening teamwork, trust, and collaboration and creating a more inclusive and supportive work environment.

 

Methodology and Technical Approach

The Consultant will be responsible for designing and implementing engaging, interactive group activities that align with the retreat’s objectives. These activities will foster collaboration, team spirit, and meaningful engagement of participants. Additionally, the Consultant is expected to provide a comprehensive summary of the retreat proceedings, particularly focusing on the sessions they facilitate, capturing key discussions, insights, outcomes and recommendations.

 

Activities, Tasks, Outputs and Deliverables

Activities:

  • Review, modify and finalize the retreat agenda with COSA Exco.
  • Plan sessions and organize necessary materials.
  • Facilitate sessions covering topics as agreed with the Staff Association and Senior Management Team, and in line with the purpose and objectives of the retreat.
  • Where necessary, make on-the-spot adjustments to the agenda and/or session after agreement and coordinate with COSA Exco and Management Team to enrich or emphasize certain topics based on lessons learned.
  • Submit a comprehensive report based on the discussions, observations, and recommendations from the retreat.

 

Deliverables:

  1. Finalized agenda
  2. Session plan or protocol
  3. In-person facilitation over three days’ schedule
  4. Final report with recommendations

 

Management, Organization and Timeframe

Reporting:

The Consultant Facilitator will report to the Chairperson of COSA Exco. S/he will participate in scheduled meetings with the COSA Exco and Management Team to discuss and implement the consultancy. UNICEF will provide the necessary logistical support to ensure the Consultant Facilitator can effectively carry out their responsibilities.

The Consultant is entirely responsible for their transport to the retreat venue.

 

UNICEF Consultancy Terms:

Any documents or output produced as part of this consultancy will remain the property of UNICEF for all purposes.

 

Payment:

Payment will be made as a one-time disbursement upon the successful completion of all deliverables, subject to approval by the Chairperson of the COSA Exco. No advance payments will be applicable.

 

Timeframe or Schedule of Deliverables:

This assignment will be completed within nine (9) working days, covering three key phases:

  • Agenda Development (2 days): Collaborate with COSA Exco and the Management Team to develop and finalize the retreat agenda between 22nd-23rd September 2025
  • Retreat Facilitation (3 days): Lead the staff retreat from 24th-26th September 2025
  • Report Preparation and Submission (4 days): Prepare and submit a comprehensive report summarizing key discussions, action points and other relevant outcomes from the retreat. This should be completed between 25th September and 2nd October.

 

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

  • Advanced university degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in training and facilitation techniques, including participatory methods.
  • Should have conducted a similar activity for a UN agency or international NGO.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to engage diverse and multicultural audiences effectively.
  • Ability to adapt content to different learning styles and cultural contexts.
  • Strong organizational, preparation, and time-management skills to plan and deliver sessions efficiently.
  • Competence in documenting sessions, preparing reports, and maintaining records.

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance.  Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station is required for IP positions and will be facilitated by UNICEF. Should you be selected for a position with UNICEF, you either must be inoculated as required or receive a medical exemption from the relevant department of the UN. Otherwise, the selection will be canceled.
