| The Engineering Technician II supports research and instructional operations within the Department of Chemistry by assisting faculty, staff, and research groups with the design, fabrication, repair, modification, and maintenance of custom research apparatus and laboratory equipment. This position provides technical support through all phases of apparatus development, including consultation, design interpretation, material selection, machining, welding, assembly, testing, and troubleshooting. Work involves the use of conventional machine tools, welding and brazing equipment, electrical test equipment, CAD and hand-drawn sketches, and other specialized shop tools to produce custom components and assemblies used in complex research environments.
This position also supports the continued operation of departmental laboratory instrumentation and related systems by diagnosing problems, repairing or rebuilding components, manufacturing obsolete or replacement parts, and maintaining equipment such as pumps, refrigeration systems, centrifuges, chillers, and other laboratory support devices. In addition, this position is responsible for maintaining machine shop equipment and work areas in a safe, orderly, and operational condition and for maintaining records related to fabrication, repair history, and CNC/CAM programming files. |
