Job Description:

A Postdoctoral Associate position is available in the Ron Davis Lab at The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation &Technology in Jupiter, Florida. The work will focus on drug discovery for neurodegenerative diseases as related primarily to mitochondrial biology and the mitochondrial dysfunction that occurs in neurodegenerative diseases. ALS is the primary disease focus. The potential projects within this area include but are not limited to:

  • Cell based assays (primarily imaging) for mitochondrial biology using human, normal and diseased iPSC-derived neurons.
  • Cell based assays (primarily imaging) for mitochondrial biology as related to other interacting organelles, including the endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes, and the nucleus.
  • High throughput assay development to measure various parameters of mitochondrial function.
  • Testing novel compounds for their ability to offset the mitochondrial dysfunction that occurs in neurodegenerative diseases and iPSC-derived neurons representative of the disease.
  • Testing promising compounds for their in vivo pharmacokinetic properties in wildtype and mouse models for neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Testing promising compounds for efficacy using mouse models for neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Identifying targets and mechanism of action for novel compounds that have been identified.

Required Qualifications:

Must possess a doctoral degree in Chemistry or the Biological Sciences. A pending doctoral degree may be considered with approval of the Principal Investigator.

Preferred:
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the project areas listed above, or expertise in a related area that would directly translate into expertise in the listed project areas.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to vigorously move a project forward with little day-to-day supervision.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with other lab members.
