Extract DNA from citrus leaf, root, trunk and soil samples taken from field test sites for detection of the HLB pathogen, the causal agent for the bacterial citrus disease known as citrus greening using qPCR analysis. Test samples for the presence of transcription products and create standard curves for each qPCR plate using dilutions of plasmid DNA. Modify protocols for limiting contamination while preparing qPCR plates. Will be required to drive to field and greenhouse sites.
Collect, record, verify, and analyze scientific data from experiments. Use spreadsheets, databases, word processing, and other software to analyze and tabulate data. Modify computational techniques as needed. Summarize data results for reports, presentations, and manuscript preparation.
Set up and study Agrobacteria transformed callus tissue.
Prepare sterile stock solutions for DNA extraction as well as solid or liquid media for subculturing tissue cultures in a biological cabinet or laminar flow hood using sterile technique. Inventory lab regularly to ensure that no time is lost due to lack of necessary supplies.
Supervise and train volunteers, part-time (OPS) assistants, students, visiting scientists, and other personnel involved on projects under their management.
Occasionally assist with field activities such as treatment applications, fruit harvests, and postharvest evaluations. Other duties as assigned.
