The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a permanent part-time and fixed term Staff Specialist – DEM vacancies at Royal Hobart Hospital.

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania, and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania Medical School.  The Hospital provides most specialist medical services for the region or state.

The permanent position will be allocated to a specialist with an interest in research who can work within the Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency Department to create a program which fulfils college accreditation requirements.

The Emergency Department has direct access to all medical and surgical specialties and has approximately 60,000 presentations per year.  The Department has in excess of 250 staff, consisting of medical, nursing, allied health, clerical, aides, and orderlies.


A remuneration package comprising the Award base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicants dependent on clinical experience and seniority. 


Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2017

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.


Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

Period of Employment

Permanent part-time shift work, working 38 hours per fortnight.

Fixed term full-time or part-time shift work, working up to 76 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible for up to two years.


Emergency Department, Royal Hobart Hospital


Working in the role of Staff Specialist – DEM you will:

  • Provide specialist emergency care to public and private patients attending the Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) at the Royal Hobart Hospital.
  • Participate in research and quality improvement activities, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at Royal Hobart Hospital.
  • Provide specialist advice to inpatient units as required.

Essential Requirements

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer.  The following checks are to be conducted:
1.  Conviction checks in the following areas:
a)  Crimes of Violence
b)  Sex Related Offences
c)  Serious Drug Offences
d)  Crimes involving dishonesty
2.  Identification check
3.  Disciplinary action in previous employment check
