Job description:

Come join the first Tasmanian Specialist Dementia Care Program (SCDP)

In 2023 Glenview and The Tasmanian Health Service – Older Persons Mental Health Service (OPMHS) secured funding from the Australian Government to establish the first Tasmanian Specialist Dementia Care Program (SCDP). OPMHS supports this SCDP in the admission, care and discharge of SDCP clients, and the delivery and review of clinical services.

The SDCP objectives are to:

  • provide care for people exhibiting very severe behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) who are unable to be effectively cared for by mainstream aged care services.
  • enable residential aged care providers to deliver care in a dedicated dementia friendly environment (generally a dedicated unit within a broader residential care service)
  • provide intensive, specialised residential care with a focus on stabilising and reducing the person’s symptoms over time with the aim of enabling transition to a less intensive care setting.
  • complement the existing Australian Government-funded Dementia Support Australia service and Severe Behaviour Response Teams (SBRTs)
  •  enhance the existing health and aged care service systems for people with very severe BPSD, including complementing state and territory government services and supports.
  • generate evidence on best practice care for people exhibiting very severe BPSD that can be adapted for use in mainstream settings to benefit all people with dementia.

The role:

As part of a multidisciplinary mental health service delivering high quality mental health care and, in accordance with Mental Health Service principles, National Mental Health Standards, Agency policy, legal requirements and relevant professional competencies, the Psychiatrist:

  • Provides comprehensive general inpatient and community psychiatric services in the north west region of Tasmania.
  • Acts as a consultant to mental health professionals and health service providers, including general practitioners and other agencies, regarding the assessment and management of individuals with mental health disorders.
  • Undertakes supervisory responsibilities with Registrars/Career Medical Officers, Resident Medical Officers and other medical staff as required/appropriate.

Details of Appointment

Fixed Term part time, day worker (with on-call) position working 15.2 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible until 30 June 2027.

Salary:

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1- Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 $210,000 - $301,349 per annum, pro rata + 11.5% superannuation 

Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $291,472 -$301,349 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

  • Salary range is in accordance with Salaried Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available: 

  • Provision of a motor vehicle allowance of $28,389 per annum, pro rata
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,480 per annum, pro rata
  • Relocation and commencement support available up to $15,000 for approved appointees
  • Allowance in lieu of participating in private practice scheme 35% of base salary (if applicable)
  • Other allowances as applicable

Eligibility:

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria:

  1. Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty.

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
