Job description:

Lead a highly skilled and dynamic team of more than one hundred anaesthetists, registrars, and residents at the Royal Hobart Hospital, Tasmania’s largest acute care setting, the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania, and the principal clinical teaching hospital and research centre for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine.

The Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest hospital located in the heart of the city centre and is the major referral centre for the state. There are around 3,000 employees, delivering quality healthcare through 684 beds with the Anaesthesia and Perioperative team playing an integral role in providing a range of general, specialty, medical and surgical services.

Employment Type and Title:

Permanent, Full Time Position (part time/job share arrangement possible) as Staff Specialist Anaesthetist and Fixed-term (3-year) position as the Director of the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine (DAPM).

Base Salary Ranges:

Employment (pro rata for part-time) under the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award as a Specialist Medical Practitioner - Level 1 to 11 ($210,000 - $288,000) or Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner (subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria) – Level 1 to 3 ($291,472 - $301,349). The starting salary will be negotiated based on the candidate's experience and expertise.

Additional Allowances (calculated on the salaried incremental point):

  • Management allowance of 15% for Director of Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine.
  • Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle (subject to working full-time hours) OR allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $27,535 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
  • Private Practice Scheme (PPS) Allowance (subject to approval from the PPS Committee):  35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,480 pro rata per annum.
  • On call allowance and call back allowance.
  • All other allowances as per current Award.

Superannuation: 11.5% employer contribution is in addition to the base salary

Salary packaging: Up to $9,010 towards living expenses + $2650 in meal entertainment or accommodation, is available each FBT year. 

Relocation: Individualised package to provide relocation support.

In this Role you will:

  • Be a values-driven senior leader in Tasmania’s largest acute care setting, supporting like-minded people in multi-disciplinary teams to improve the health and wellbeing of Tasmanian patients and their families - making a tangible difference to where you live and work.
  • Lead a large, highly skilled team delivering comprehensive and subspecialised anaesthetist services across the broad range of surgical subspecialties, including trauma, paediatric surgery, cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, vascular and obstetrics specialities in the perioperative precinct, the preadmission clinics and the broader hospital environment.
  • Anaesthesia services are also provided for the Cardiac Catheter Lab, Endoscopy Unit and Medical Imaging Department including Interventional and Neurointerventional Radiology, CT/MRI, and PET scan.
  • Drive best practice in the Department of Anaesthesia & Peri-operative Medicine and across the broader hospital community to ensure the provision of the highest standard of care for patients.
  • Bring your significant skills to educate others in leading a high-quality specialist teaching department, as well as continue strong links with the University of Tasmania and Menzies Research Centre, participating in multi-centre research trials and encouraging local research.
  • Represent the Department of Anaesthesia & Perioperative Medicine within the hospital, the department, and external settings.
  • Ensure the development, implementation and maintenance of performance management systems which support the ongoing development of individual and team performance and skills for medical, nursing, and administrative staff.
  • Ensure a system of continuous quality improvement that systematically evaluates and identifies opportunities for improvement and plans to implement strategies to meet patient needs and national and organisational KPIs.
  • Manage the human, material, and financial resources for medical, nursing, and administrative staff of the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Services.

    Fixed term, full-time day work (with on-call), working 76 hours per fortnight commencing on a mutually agreeable date to be confirmed following negotiation for 3 years.

    Flexible working hours may be negotiated with the successful applicant, including job share arrangements. Applications for co-joint appointments for the Director role will be considered.

    Please note that applicants from outside of the Department of Health that are deemed appointable from this process will also be recommended for the appointment to a Permanent, Staff Specialist – Anaesthetist role in addition to this fixed term Director position.

  • Essential Requirements

    • Recognition as an Anaesthetist by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) holding FANZCA or equivalent.
    • Clinical exposure at a tertiary hospital standard within the last 12 months.
