The Royal Hobart Hospital is seeking a Specialist Ear Nose & Throat (ENT) surgeon
The Royal Hobart Hospital and Department of Otolaryngology is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for role of Specialist ENT surgeon.
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced ENT Surgeon, with a passion for ENT service provision, to live and work in the beautiful State of Tasmania.
The role may be undertaken on a full or part-time basis as a staff specialist with rights to private practice within the health service, or as a part-time Visiting Medical Specialist. This component may be negotiated by the successful applicant with the RHH Surgical and Perioperative Services. Either option allows the successful candidate to undertake private practice in the private sector.
Competitive Salary and Allowances
A total value package of up to $619,196* will be offered depending on your level of experience on 1 January 2025.
*Value calculated for a full-time, Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11, includes the market allowance, and excludes any on-call or call back provisions.
About the Royal Hobart Otolaryngology Department
The Royal Hobart Hospital Otolaryngology Department delivers comprehensive ENT services to adult and paediatric patients from southern Tasmania and is the tertiary referral centre for Tasmania. Our specialists have a broad range of subspecialty interests including in Head and Neck, Laryngology, and Congenital hearing loss. The Otolaryngology Department is well supported by Audiology and Speech Pathology Departments.
The Otolaryngology Department provides an active teaching program in conjunction with the University of Tasmania and is an ASOHNS training site with one accredited and two unaccredited trainees.
Our Outpatient clinics and Theatre facilities are well-appointed with up-to-date facilities and equipment and are well supported by qualified and dedicated clinical support staff.
The Department works closely with colleagues from other department such as Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic surgery, Respiratory Medicine, Paediatrics and the Department of Emergency Medicine.
The Role
The role will be based at the Royal Hobart Hospital, the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania, and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine.
The role will provide clinical services of the highest possible standard for ENT patients and actively pursue improved outcomes for ENT patients by participating in teaching and research relevant to Otolaryngology services.
Applicants are required to hold FRACS qualifications with current (or ability to obtain) Specialist Registration with AHPRA.
The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate:
- A successful track record of clinical service provision as an ENT Surgeon.
- The ability to manage adult and paediatric patients within the discipline of Otolaryngology and the ability to work with a multidisciplinary team.
- Proven capacity for undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and the ability to undertake research activities.
- The ability to communicate effectively and maintain good interpersonal relationships in dealing with patients, their relatives, and professional colleagues.
The incumbent is required to:
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team to provide the highest possible standard of ENT clinical services to patients.
- Provide elective and emergency services for ENT patients including diagnosis, treatment and postoperative care for patients, both inpatient and outpatient, at the RHH.
- Take part in the on-call roster and undertake call-back work.
- Work outside normal hours conducting weekend ward rounds as required.
- Participate in undergraduate and post-graduate teaching.
- Opportunity for research in the field of ENT.

Period of Employment
Permanent, or fixed term, full-time or part-time day work (with on-call) working up to 76 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible.
Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time and part time vacancies.
Base Salary: $216,300 to $310,389 pro rata, per annum
A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.
Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $216,300 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $296,640 with further salary increments available.
- Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 - $310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award
In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:
- Salary packaging options include a range of benefits like living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment every year
- Market allowance - $110,000
- Motor vehicle allowance of $28,389 per annum, pro rata
- Subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.
- Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,480 per annum, pro rata
- On call allowance % of Base Salary
- Travel and relocation assistance support available up to $15,000 for eligible appointees

Essential Requirements
- Holds specialist registration; or
- Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway; or
- Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.
