Why Tasmania?

It’s different here.

Life in Tasmania provides high quality work/life balance and opportunities for meaningful wellbeing and career longevity. Here you can pursue what drives you, both professionally and personally in a flexible environment conducive to a more manageable, simpler life.

We invite you to be part of this special place, to quietly pursue the extraordinary in our climate refuge, whether it be world-class bushwalking, mountain biking or paddock to plate dining. At work, every team member matters and makes a difference. Rather than being part of marginal gains in big city systems, take the opportunity to be a major driver of important leaps forward in emergency medicine in this regional centre.

Who Are We Looking For?

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Co-Clinical Director – Emergency Medicine for the Tasmanian Health Service (THS) across the North West region. The role is shared with an existing Co-Clinical Director who has been in post for almost 2 years.  The post requires the successful applicant to provide a high level of strategic leadership and direction, compassionate and mature leadership of multidisciplinary frontline staff, ensuring strong relationships are built and maintained and that emergency medicine services are effectively integrated within the hospital/service.  The post requires leading a team towards delivering a high-quality service with efficient resource utilisation and cost effective policies, in addition to providing direct clinical care.

Ideally, we are seeking a FACEM >3 years post fellowship or FACRRM/FRACGP >3 years post fellowship with extensive experience as an emergency medicine consultant in Australasia, some of that experience being in rural or regional contexts. A demonstrated experience of leadership in emergency medicine and success managing large and complex teams. Willing to work at least 0.75 FTE (0.5 clinical director, 0.25-0.5 staff specialist).

About Us

We are an inclusive team who have found NW Tasmania to be a beautiful place to live and an excellent location to pursue our professional goals.  In our small group we have specialists with extensive experience and qualifications in diverse sub speciality areas including but limited to: simulation, toxicology, POCUS, Australian Defence Force, paediatric emergency medicine, humanitarian medicine, disaster medicine, clinical research, palliative care, VAD, medical education and administration.  With the co-director model, you will have the opportunity to develop in areas of leadership, management and strategy that match your passion and skillset.  We are also a hub for the ACEM EMET program and opportunities exist to be involved in this outreach educational program to the more remote areas in the NW including King Island and Queenstown.

Servicing a population of approximately 116,000, the THS North West has major sites, North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) and Mersey Community Hospital (MCH), located approximately 50km apart, with each department managing approximately 30,000 presentations per annum.  The NWRH is the regional trauma centre and has inpatient general medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, ICU and mental health. Both departments operate a VST telemedicine program for acute stroke presentations.  The MCH is a subacute hospital with limited general medicine inpatient services, and inpatient rehabilitation unit.  Both EDs have excellent access to 24 hour pathology and 24 hour radiology services (on call between 11pm and 7am).  Staffing is equivalent across both sites and consists of Staff Specialists, Registrars and Residents rostered to each shift.

The NWRH is accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) for 12 months training, with ambition to reach 24 months, and by both the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College for Rural and Remote (ACRRM) medicine for Advanced skills training in Emergency.  At this time we have trainees from all three colleges working in our departments.  Both departments are also accredited by ACEM for the Associateship Emergency Medicine Training Programs (Foundational, Intermediate and Advanced), and we have multiple FACEMS who are accredited as supervisors for these programs.
