Job description:

The Health Improvement and Partnerships team within the Community, Mental Health and Wellbeing – Public Health Services division of the Tasmanian Department of Health plays a crucial role in promoting and protecting the health of Tasmanians through proactive, community-focused initiatives.

The Team:

 The Health Improvement team is responsible for:

  • Chronic disease prevention: Developing and implementing strategies to reduce the incidence of preventable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and obesity.
  • Health promotion: Leading campaigns and programs that encourage healthy lifestyles, including physical activity, healthy eating, and tobacco and alcohol harm reduction.
  • Community engagement: Working closely with local communities, schools, and organizations to tailor health initiatives that meet specific regional needs.
  • Policy development and advocacy: Informing and shaping public health policy to support long-term health improvements across Tasmania.
  • Data and research: Collecting and analysing health data to guide evidence-based decision-making and evaluate the effectiveness of health programs.

This team is a cornerstone of Tasmania’s public health strategy, ensuring that health improvement is not just about treating illness, but about creating environments where people can thrive.

The Role:

Provides high level leadership and strategic direction for integrated preventive health initiatives while achieving a high-performance, values-based work culture. Responsible for the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs and policies that enhance community well-being, prevent chronic conditions, and reduce health inequities. The Manager - Health Improvement & Partnerships will guide multi-disciplinary teams and coordinate complex, cross-sectoral efforts by fostering collaborations among government and nongovernmental organisations, academic institutions, and community groups. In addition, the role involves overseeing operational excellence, maintaining robust evaluation frameworks, and ensuring that strategic priorities evolve to address emerging preventive health challenges and opportunities.

You will need:

  • Lead the design and implementation of evidence-informed policies, systems, and program development and utilise collaboration, research, planning, and evaluation to ensure initiatives align with government priorities and best practices in public health.
  • Oversee the effective management of human, physical, and financial resources. Direct projects and initiatives, ensuring comprehensive planning, budget management, progress monitoring, and outcome evaluation. Provide clear guidance and supervision to specialist staff, project teams, and operational units.
  • Provide expert operational and strategic advice on corporate governance, risk management, and business operations. Support the development of strategic and business planning processes to maintain high standards of accountability and organisational performance.

Details of appointment:

Permanent full time, day worker working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.

*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time, and casual vacancies.

Salary: $139,470 to $148,863 per annum. Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2022.
