Employment type:

Part Time

Region:

Location:

54 Kalang Ave, Lenah Valley

Job description:

We are looking for a General Practitioner for the Roy Fagan Centre. The GP at RFC has responsibility for providing the primary health care of inpatients admitted under the Older Persons Mental Health Service, including assessing and managing the medical , surgical, and other health concerns that may arise in this largely elderly group. The care can range from annual vaccinations, incidental illnesses, chronic and complex conditions, through to palliative and terminal care.

The Centre:

The RFC provides care for elderly patients with mental illness, often with age-related frailty or comorbid dementia. The Roy Fagan is also a quaternary referral centre for people with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). People with young onset dementia or Huntington’s disease are sometimes admitted to RFC. The interventions provided for patients admitted to RFC range from fully restorative, through to palliative and terminal.  The majority of patients are admitted under the Older Person’s Mental Health Service, and up to ten patients are admitted under the Geriatrics service. A new Operational Service Manual is now being finalised as part of a reform program which has been running for four years.

The Team:

The Roy Fagan Centre clinical team is led by Old Age Psychiatrists who train psychiatry registrars, and the senior nurses who lead nurses with general and psychiatric training and experience. The care assistants, enrolled nurses, and general nurses have a newly enhanced leadership structure. The multidisciplinary team includes social workers and other allied health professionals, and as part of the reform program the appointment of more allied health professionals is underway.

The Role:

We are looking for a General Practitioner for the Roy Fagan Centre. The GP at RFC has responsibility for providing the primary health care of inpatients admitted under the Older Persons Mental Health Service, including assessing and managing the medical , surgical, and other health concerns that may arise in this largely elderly group. The GP will need to liaise at times with specialists, for example the visiting geriatrician on site or specialists at the Royal Hobart Hospital. The GP is part of the senior clinical leadership team and is expected to advise on broader issues that may arise in the care of this medically vulnerable group.

You will need:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to implement evidence-based practices and adhere to contemporary clinical standards and policies relevant to OPMHS.
  • Recent experience in an older person’s mental health setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in risk assessment and risk management in relation to the clinical management of older clients with mental health problems, dementia, and/or physical health issues.
  • Demonstrated capacity to exercise a significant level of independent clinical judgement in completing primary tasks while taking into account relevant policies and protocols and working as a team player in engaging and providing clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team decision-making process as appropriate.
  • Demonstrated patient focus by displaying personal qualities of respect, politeness and empathy while at the same time being able to confidently balance this with duty of care considerations requiring appropriately responsive and confident clinical decision-making to enhance clinical safety and clinical outcomes
