Exciting opportunity for a Clinical Nurse Consultant to join the Department of Health!

The Team:

The Communicable Diseases Prevention Unit (CDPU) delivers essential public health services across Tasmania, including communicable disease surveillance, case management, outbreak response and the coordination of statewide immunisation programs. The unit also leads the development and implementation of key state and national policy initiatives, including national health reform activities and National Partnership Agreements.

Within this environment, the Immunisation Section provides expert guidance and operational support to immunisation providers and stakeholders across the state. As part of Public Health Services, the team plays a critical role in protecting the health of the Tasmanian community through evidence‑based immunisation practice, strong partnerships and effective program delivery.

The Role:

The Clinical Nurse Consultant – Immunisation is a statewide leadership position responsible for providing expert clinical guidance, coordination and support across Tasmania’s state and national immunisation programs. Working closely with the Nurse Manager, medical staff and immunisation providers, the role strengthens public health outcomes by ensuring high‑quality, evidence‑based immunisation practice.

Key responsibilities include supporting the planning, implementation, maintenance and evaluation of immunisation programs, including obligations under the National Partnership Agreement on Essential Vaccines. The role also involves building and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders, offering high‑quality communication, advice and support to health professionals and the public. In addition, the CNC facilitates and delivers education and training to health professionals, government agencies and community organisations.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate advanced clinical nursing expertise in immunisation, along with the ability to participate in research and apply quality improvement principles to support informed decision making and innovation. The role requires sound knowledge of adult learning principles and the capability to plan, deliver and evaluate education and information sessions for diverse audiences. Strong program and project leadership skills, including effective resource management, are essential to ensure the successful delivery of high‑quality immunisation initiatives.

You will need:

  1. Demonstrated clinical nursing expertise in the management of immunisation and communicable diseases.
  2. Demonstrated capacity to participate in research, developing and applying quality improvement principles and strategies, with the ability to coordinate and integrate findings to support decision making, innovative thinking and objective analysis to achieve agreed outcomes.
  3. Demonstrated highly developed leadership, communication, interpersonal, problem solving and decision-making skills with the ability to apply these skills within a sensitive setting and to ensure effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.

Details of appointment:

Permanent, part time, day worker position, working 60.8 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible. 

*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time, and casual vacancies.

Salary: $118,297 to $125,543 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Nurses and Midwives (Tasmania State Service) Agreement 2023.

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

  • Post Graduate Allowance of up to 10 % based on qualification type

Eligibility:

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria.

  • Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Nurse

  • Certificate as a Nurse Immuniser registered with Public Health within Tasmania

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • Current Driver’s Licence

  • Postgraduate qualification in immunisation
