Job description:

Participate and train in the diagnostic Haematology service for inpatients and outpatients of the Launceston General Hospital (LGH). Participate in undergraduate and post graduate teaching. Participate in research and quality improvement activities.

Registrar Haematology

  • A fixed term 3-month Haematology Clinical Registrar position is available at the Launceston General Hospital, Launceston, Tasmania, from 24th August – 12 November 2026. This position is supported by a team of 5.4 FTE consultant haematologists, 1 BPT ward registrar, 2 ward RMOs and a Laboratory Advanced Trainee.

Work involves a mix of inpatient and outpatient care in a multidisciplinary setting. Duties include:

  1. Providing a consultative haematology service in conjunction with the on-call Haematologist for inpatients at LGH, as well as providing phone advice for GPs and rural hospitals.
  2. Regular outpatient clinics under supervision of Consultant Haematologists
  3. Assisting with assessment and management of ambulatory haematology patients requiring treatment within the WP Holman Clinic outpatient facility, Launceston General Hospital.
  4. Advising, mentoring and overseeing the work of junior medical staff assigned to the care of inpatient haematology patients at the Launceston General Hospital when needed, including participation in the on-call roster with Consultant Support.
  5. Participation in local research projects and clinical trials

The Team:

The Northern Cancer Service provides comprehensive cancer care to the population of Northern/North West Tasmania (250,000 people). Treatment centres are located at the WP Holman Clinic, Launceston General Hospital, North West Regional Cancer Centre, Burnie, and the Mersey Community Hospital.

The haematology service at the Launceston General provides an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment. Using state of the art technology, the service combines the disciplines of medical and radiation oncology, as well as haematology and palliative care on one site.  The range of conditions managed is diverse and includes both malignant and benign haematology in inpatients and outpatients. Allogeneic stem cell transplants are not performed in Tasmania but after-care from d+100 onward is usually transferred from Melbourne to the local Tasmanian haematologists. Apheresis and stem cell collection are performed on-site.

The Northern Cancer Service will provide the successful applicant with a quality clinical, educational and developmental experience. An extensive range of diagnostic and imaging services, including CT, MRI and PET, are available in Launceston.  

The Launceston General Hospital is a major training site for the University of Tasmania Clinical School. Teaching and research is encouraged.  The Holman Clinic also runs a number of clinical trials and registries out of the Oncology Clinical Trials Unit and the successful applicant will be expected to assist in the care and review of clinical trials patients.

Details of appointment:

  • Fixed term, full time, day worker position, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing from 24 August 2026 until 14 November 2026. You will receive 10 hours of paid, protected training time per fortnight, pro rata. *notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant

Salary:

Medical Practitioner Level 5 - 11 $134,930 - $189,005 per annum, pro rata + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging

  • Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022
