The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is the largest hospital in Tasmania with approximately 500 beds. It is the state-wide referral centre for numerous tertiary services for Tasmania and an accredited Level 3 teaching hospital, as well as the community hospital for the Greater Hobart Region.
The hospital offers services in all major medical and surgical specialties including a newly established trauma service as well as ICU, CCU, extensive burns treatment unit, hyperbaric medicine unit, acute stroke unit, psychiatry, obstetrics & gynaecology, and paediatrics. We also have off-site rehabilitation services.
The Department of General and Acute Care Medicine is the largest inpatient medical unit at the RHH. We have on average 60-90 inpatients, and admit approximately 15 to 20 per day spread across 5 Acute Medical teams, including a Rapid Assessment Medical Unit (RAMU), and another unit based in the Emergency Medicine department.
Presently the department has a mix of full time and part time Staff Specialists, many of whom have sub-specialty interests. Each unit has two medical registrars and 2 Junior Medical Officers (Intern or RMO).
Medical Registrars participate in the full spectrum of acute care from admission to discharge with the support of a multi-disciplinary team. They also form a vital part of the medical emergency team (MET) for the hospital.
Registrars may be required to undertake an external 3-month rotation to the North West Regional Hospital (General Medicine) or the Launceston General Hospital (subspecialty term). All registrars will be required to complete a term of afterhours/nights/relief.
Our medical registrar positions provide opportunities for those seeking RACP-accredited Basic Physician Training. We pride ourselves on a strong BPT training programme supported by our Directors of Physician Education, and by physicians throughout the hospital with a strong commitment to supporting trainees through exam preparations. We have recently restructured and strengthened our BPT teaching program to further optimise support for our trainees. The BPT trainees get 5 hours of paid teaching time per week according to the new award established this year.
For those BPTs who require a subspecialty rotation, we can regularly provide Cardiology, Geriatrics and ICU rotations, and Renal and Gastroenterology rotations on a less frequent basis. There is also a regional rotation to Northwest Regional Hospital in Burnie, and a broad variety of subspecialty rotations available at Launceston General Hospital including those not available at RHH.
Our Medical Registrar positions can also provide core medical training opportunities for suitable applicants from non-BPT pathways including Critical Care and Emergency Medicine.
Please note that currency with ALS/ACLS (a refresher course every 3 years) is required. Funding for this will be the responsibility of the staff member, but a generous CPD allowance can be used.

The Department of General and Acute Care Medicine at RHH also provides opportunities for Advanced Training in General and Acute Care Medicine. BPT trainees succeeding in passing the clinical RACP examinations may be offered the opportunity to smoothly transition into an Advanced Training (AT) positions within the hospital. These AT positions include Core General Medicine, Cardiology, Respiratory medicine, Neurology and Stroke, Renal medicine, and Gastroenterology.

$134,930 - $189,005 per annum
Salary range is in accordance with the Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

Duties
The Registrar is responsible for the day-to-day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the Hospital and provides after-hours emergency cover at the hospital.

- General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements).
