Job description:

As a Career Medical Officer, you will work with a high level of independence while supported by senior clinicians and accountable to the Clinical Director. In this after-hours role, you will provide mental health care across the Royal Hobart Hospital, including assessing Emergency Department referrals with psychiatrist support, managing inpatient mental health units, and delivering specialist care to patients across the hospital, along with other duties suited to your experience.

The Role:

As a Career Medical Officer, you will work with a high level of professional independence while remaining accountable to the Clinical Director. Clinical direction, guidance, and supervision are provided by consultant psychiatrists and senior medical staff.
You will provide mental health medical services across the Royal Hobart Hospital after hours, (rostered on fortnightly basis, from 22:30pm to 08:30am including handover times), including:

  • Assessing and managing patients referred to Mental Health Services from the Emergency Department, with remote guidance (telephone support) from the on-call psychiatrist.
  • Providing medical care to patients in inpatient mental health units, including the Short Stay Unit
  • Attending to mental health patients located throughout the hospital who require specialist medical input
  • You may also be allocated additional duties consistent with your qualifications and clinical experience.

Key Responsibilities:

While performing this role, you will be expected to:

Liaise closely and professionally with consultant psychiatrists regarding patient assessment and management
• Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation, including admissions, progress notes, decisions, and discharge summaries
• Ensure all medical decisions are clearly recorded in the patient medical record
• Promote collaborative working relationships with the multidisciplinary team involved in patient care
• Respond promptly to clinical calls from Registered Nurses and other clinical staff
• Perform clinical procedures as required and within scope of practice
• Ensure accurate prescribing, administration, and documentation of medications and treatments
• Actively participate in discharge planning and continuity of care
• Comply with all professional, ethical, and legal obligations, including requirements under the Tasmanian Mental Health Act

Details of Appointment:

Permanent full time, shift worker position working night duty based at Royal Hobart Hospital, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing from as soon as possible.

Salary:

Career Medical Officer (CMO) 

Career Medical Officer Level 1 - 7 $128,750 - $183,340 per annum, pro rata + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging 

  • Salary range is in with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:
