Job description:

Join Tasmania’s health executive leadership team and play a pivotal role at the centre of decision-making, influencing strategic priorities, major reforms, and statewide health service outcomes. Reporting directly to the Deputy Secretary, this exciting opportunity offers the chance to work with senior leaders, clinicians, and government stakeholders to drive meaningful change across Tasmania’s public health system.

The Team:

Health Service Operations is responsible for the oversight, performance, and strategic direction of Tasmania’s public health services, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality and sustainable care across the system.

The division works across:

  • Acute hospital services
  • Community and integrated care services
  • System performance, access, and flow
  • Strategic reform and statewide programs

As part of this team, you will contribute to statewide system leadership, supporting coordination between services, strengthening accountability, and advancing priority reforms that improve outcomes for Tasmanians.

This is an environment defined by:

  • Direct engagement with Government and Ministers
  • A focus on system improvement, performance, and reform

The Role:

This is a unique and highly influential opportunity to work at the interface between clinical service delivery and government decision-making.

Reporting to the Deputy Secretary, Health Service Operations, the Manager – Office of the Deputy Secretary provides high-level strategic, policy, and operational support across one of Tasmania’s most critical health portfolios and manage other staff in the office.

You will:

  • Lead and coordinate the Deputy Secretary’s Office to deliver high-quality briefings, ministerial correspondence, and executive support
  • Provide authoritative advice on strategic priorities, governance, and system risks
  • Drive and oversee key projects and initiatives impacting statewide health service delivery
  • Work closely with senior leaders, clinicians, and government stakeholders to translate operational realities into policy and decision-making
  • Represent the Office in key forums and, where required, act on behalf of the Deputy Secretary

This role requires sound judgement, discretion, and the ability to operate with autonomy, agility, and influence in a dynamic, high-pressure environment.

You will need:

  • Proven high level management and organisation skills, and ability to provide advice with a demonstrated understanding of the political, cultural, and organisational environment affecting government, the Department of Health and the Tasmanian health system.
  • High level experience in, and proven ability to, manage human and financial resources and the demonstrated ability to foster a productive and supportive team environment through the application of contemporary management practices, and monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the team and its activities against specific outcomes.
  • Demonstrated high level knowledge and experience in contemporary project management, together with a proven capacity to manage and deliver complex project objectives.

Details of appointment:

Permanent full time, day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible. 

*Notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Salary:

$144,169 to $153,844 per annum. Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2025.

Salary Packaging:

You’ll have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $9,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible.
