Our team provides evidence-based acute stroke care, working collaboratively with medical specialists, allied health professionals, patients and their families to achieve the best possible outcomes. As a Registered Nurse, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality, compassionate care, supporting early rehabilitation, patient education and discharge planning, while contributing to a culture of continuous learning, safety and innovation within one of Tasmania's leading healthcare services.
The Role
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Comprehensive assessment – Undertake stroke-specific neurological observations, validated swallow screening and ongoing nursing assessment in line with the Acute Stroke Clinical Care Standard and NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (Standard 4).
- Recognising and responding to acute deterioration – Identify, escalate and respond to clinical deterioration using ISBAR and local rapid response processes (NSQHS Standard 8).
- Medication safety – Safely administer and monitor high-risk medications including antithrombotics, anticoagulants and post-thrombolysis regimens (NSQHS Standard 4).
- Comprehensive care – Deliver evidence-based, individualised care that minimises the risk of pressure injuries, falls, VTE, delirium, malnutrition and aspiration (NSQHS Standard 5).
- Cultural safety – Provide culturally safe and respectful care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and CALD patients, engaging Aboriginal Health Liaison Officers and accredited interpreters, consistent with NSQHS Standards 1 and 2 and the NMBA Code of Conduct for Nurses.
- Communicating for safety – Maintain accurate clinical documentation and participate in structured bedside handover, adapting communication for patients with aphasia or cognitive-communication deficits (NSQHS Standard 6).
- Partnering with the multidisciplinary team and consumers – Contribute to MDT care planning, support early mobilisation and reinforce rehabilitation goals in partnership with patients, families and carers (NSQHS Standard 2; Acute Stroke Clinical Care Standard).
- Secondary prevention, education and discharge planning – Educate patients and carers on stroke risk factor modification and FAST recognition, and coordinate timely referral to rehabilitation and community services (Acute Stroke Clinical Care Standard; Clinical Guidelines for Stroke Management).
You will need
- Current knowledge of, and the ability to apply nursing principles, procedures and practices in the delivery of patient/client care in a designated practice area and in line with legal requirements and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Board (NMBA) Registered Nurse standards for practice.
- Sound interpersonal and communication skills, including written skills and the ability to function effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Knowledge of continuous quality improvement (safety and quality) and the application of evidence based practice in the practice setting.

Details of appointment
Permanent full time, shift worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.
*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.
Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time, and casual vacancies.
Salary
$80,524 to $109,175 per annum. Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.
- Salary range is in accordance with Nurses and Midwives (Tasmania State Service) Agreement 2023.
Access to the Grade 4 salary range $102,439- $109,175 is subject to successful application for progression to Grade 4
In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:
- Post Graduate Allowance of up to 10% based on qualification type
