About the role
Analytical Services Tasmania (AST) provides testing services to government, businesses, and members of the public. AST undertakes environmental biological testing, and inorganic and organic chemistry testing on water, soil, and biota samples, using a broad range of analytical techniques including SFA, UV-VIS, DA, wet oxidation FID, GC, GCMS, LC, LCMS, ICP, ICPMS, and several classical techniques.
The position reports to the Manager of Analytical Services Tasmania. AST operates 5 sections based upon different testing disciplines. This position leads the Metals Section, and also provides strategic leadership to the border management of AST. Section duties include managing human and physical resources, consisting of a chemist, senior technical officer, and five technical staff undertaking a variety of techniques such as ICP, ICPMS, CVAFS, and anion IC.
The role is also responsible for:
- Developing strategic plans for current and future section services.
- Management of projects and development/validation of novel methodologies including modifications to standard procedures and practices.
- Ensuring effective co-ordination of work between sections.
- Client management.
- Providing technical assistance to the section and troubleshooting problems.
- Performing analysis of a complex, novel, or unique nature related to metals and anions testing.
- Participating in the development and training of staff.
- Assist in maintaining the quality system, including the preparation of reports to clients and the review, development and implementation of policies and procedures.

Hours per fortnight
73.50 hours per fortnight (minimum 58.80 hours, by negotiation).
Period of appointment
2 years or until the return of the substantive, whichever is earliest.
Essential requirements
- A Degree in Science relevant to the professional duties to be undertaken, as provided by a university.
Desirable requirements
- Has previously undertaken Approved Signatory duties in a NATA accredited facility.
