Job description:

As a leader of the department, the Secretary is tasked with leading and driving a comprehensive strategic agenda. The Secretary is responsible for ensuring that the department delivers policies, services and reforms to ensure accessibility to a well-functioning justice system.

The Department of Justice contributes to a safe, fair and just Tasmania delivering a wide range of services related to:

  • The administration of justice and legal services.
  • Corrections, rehabilitation, and enforcement.
  • Regulatory services.

Role Purpose

As a leader of the department, the Secretary is tasked with leading and driving a comprehensive strategic agenda. The Secretary is responsible for ensuring that the department delivers policies, services and reforms to ensure accessibility to a well-functioning justice system.

About you

This opportunity will suit a values-driven and seasoned executive leader, ideally from the Justice or adjacent sectors where they intersect with the legal system. The Secretary is concurrently a principal portfolio adviser to the Government and their Ministers, an organisation head and a leader.

Beyond the core responsibilities of this role as the Agency Head, you will be part of and play an active role with your peers across the Tasmanian Government with the potential for State and national impact.

Key attributes sought for this pivotal leadership role include:

  • Substantial strategic leadership and governance experience leading a large and sophisticated service-driven organisation at State or Federal level.
  • Extensive stakeholder engagement, influencing and negotiation skills in highly nuanced settings.
  • A strong service and community mindset to drive a responsive efficient justice and legal services.
  • Confident in providing support and advice to departmental Ministers.
  • Contemporary and highly empathic people leader with a strong track record of building a positive and collaborative high-performing workplace culture.
  • Highly credible visible leader with gravitas who is an exemplar of trust and integrity.
