Join a small team within Biosecurity Operations in a challenging but extremely rewarding job.

About the role

The Senior Biosecurity Inspector (Animal Welfare and Biosecurity) is critical to delivering field-level regulatory activities relating to animal welfare, animal biosecurity, and product integrity. Your duties will include:

  • Investigate potential breaches of legislation, secure evidence, and produce reports. This may include in meat works/ abattoir facilities while they are processing.
  • Undertake inspections often in intense and emotionally challenging environments.
  • Provide education to the community on their requirements under the Animal Welfare Act.
  • Administrative activities including record keeping, data management, and development of policies, procedures, and plans.

We have two fixed-term two-year opportunities available, one located in Tasmania’s north and one in the south.

Hours per fortnight

73.50 hours per fortnight (minimum 58.80 hours, by negotiation).

Period of appointment

2 years.

Pre Employment Checks

  • The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this position is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion or transfer.

The following checks are to be conducted:

  1. Conviction check in the following conviction areas:
  1. Crimes of violence
  2. Sex related offences
  3. Serious drug offences
  4. Crimes involving dishonesty
  5. Serious traffic offences
  6. Any other offences under the Biosecurity Act 2019, or related legislation

Essential requirements

  • Satisfactory security clearance as required by port authorities.
  • Current unrestricted motor vehicle driver’s licence.

Desirable requirements

  • Certificate IV in Government (Investigations), or equivalent.
  • Certificate IV or higher qualifications in animal science, agriculture or a related discipline.
  • Firearms licence, or capacity to obtain a firearms licence.
