Job description:

Become a team leader and play an important part in protecting Tasmania’s agriculture, environment, and way of life from biosecurity risks.

About the role

As Senior Biosecurity Officer (Travellers and Cargo), you’ll lead a team of officers in the clearance of travellers and cargo to detect and prevent biosecurity risks entering Tasmania.

  • Work in varying operational environments including airports, cruise ship ports and Port Arthur (if located in the south).
  • Engage with the public, providing advice on biosecurity legislation, policies, and practices.
  • Undertake investigations of suspected non-compliance and conduct of enforcement activities.

There are two fixed-term two-year opportunities, one located in Launceston and one in Hobart.

Hours per fortnight

73.50 hours per fortnight (minimum 58.80 hours, by negotiation).

Pre employment Checks

  • The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this position is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion or transfer.

The following checks are to be conducted:

  1. Conviction check in the following conviction areas:
  1. Crimes of violence
  2. Sex related offences
  3. Serious drug offences
  4. Crimes involving dishonesty
  5. Serious traffic offences
  6. Any other offences under the Biosecurity Act 2019, or related legislation

Essential requirements

  • Current unrestricted motor vehicle driver’s licence.

Desirable requirements

A bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Biosecurity, Biology, Horticultural or Agricultural Science, Government (Investigations) or Biosecurity Emergency Management or Certificate IV Government (Statutory Compliance), relevant to the nature of the work to be undertaken, as provided by either a university, a vocational education organisation or a registered and accredited training provider.
