Job description:

The purpose of this position is to lead a small team preventing and responding to biosecurity risks on King Island.

About the role

As Senior Biosecurity Officer on King Island, you’ll coordinate the development and implementation of a Biosecurity Management Plan for King Island and its surrounding waters.

  • Undertake investigations of suspected non-compliance and conduct of enforcement activities.
  • Investigate and review reports on biosecurity, animal welfare, and product integrity incidents.
  • Engage and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders and the King Island community.
  • Office and field-based activities, working with interesting and unique commodities on the Island.

Hours per fortnight

73.50 hours per fortnight (minimum 58.80 hours, by negotiation) - in accordance with an approved roster.

Pre-employment requirements

  • The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this position is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion or transfer.  The following check is to be conducted:

    Conviction check in the following conviction areas:

    1. Crimes of violence
    2. Sex related offences
    3. Serious drug offences
    4. Crimes involving dishonesty
    5. Serious traffic offences
    6. Any other offences under the Biosecurity Act 2019, or related legislation
  • Satisfactory security clearance as required by port authorities.

Essential requirements

  • A current unrestricted motor vehicle driver’s licence.

Desirable requirements

  • A Bachelor Degree or Diploma in Biosecurity, Biology, Horticultural or Agricultural Science, Government (Investigations) or Government (Statutory Compliance), or a relevant tertiary qualification.
