Job description:

The position contributes to the efficient operation of the Supreme Court by providing administrative support to the judiciary, and legal expertise, leadership and direction to the Criminal Registry and includes the development and implementation of criminal listing and case management practices as established by the Court.

Hours per fortnight

73.50 hours per fortnight - flexible options available. 

Duties

  • Responsible for the efficient statewide management of criminal listings and case management procedures established by the Court to ensure the fair and efficient disposal of criminal proceedings.
  • To:
  • provide support to the judiciary through administrative management of complex criminal matters.
  • provide advice on legislation and rules, particularly directed at developing new systems to ensure efficiency and effectiveness through the application of a substantial knowledge of criminal law, and experience in the conduct of complex criminal cases, and with a well-developed understanding of the legal and strategic context.
  • develop policies for the efficient administration of criminal procedures.
  • Based on a substantial knowledge of criminal law, and experience in the conduct of complex criminal cases, and with a well-developed understanding of the legal and strategic context, provide expert legal and procedural advice and analysis to the Registrar as requested about criminal and other related matters.
  • Develop and implement the Court’s procedures for the statewide management of criminal matters through consultation and negotiation with internal and external stakeholders, including members of the judiciary and the legal profession.
  • Train, guide and support Court staff, and advise legal practitioners and others, on matters arising under the Rules of Court and legislation administered within the Court, particularly in relation to criminal matters.
  • Contribute to the administration of the Court through active participation on the Court’s management team and assist in the day-to-day management of the Criminal Registry.
  • Lead, facilitate and manage organisational change resulting from judicial, administrative, and other initiatives in the Supreme Court.
  • The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, that are within the capacity, qualifications, and experience normally expected from persons occupying jobs at this classification level.

Essential Requirements

  • Admitted or eligible for admission as a Barrister or Practitioner of the Supreme Court of Tasmania.

Desirable Requirements

  • Significant relevant experience.
