Job description:
The Deputy Ombudsman exercises powers and functions delegated by the Ombudsman under the various statutes pursuant to which the Ombudsman has powers and functions.

Major Duties
- Deputise for, and represent the Ombudsman as required and generally promote the work of Ombudsman Tasmania.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the Office’s business planning, ensure the efficient and effective delivery of the range of complaint, project and research activities undertaken at the direction of the Ombudsman, and oversee the effective use of relevant financial and human resources
- As required, to provide timely, strategic, expert and authoritative advice to the Ombudsman, other staff, and key external stakeholders to enable fully informed evidence-based strategic policy recommendations and decisions
- Represent the Ombudsman in outreach activities and in liaison with agencies, Members of Parliament, and other contacts likely to impact on the work of the Office.
- Contribute to the Office’s corporate planning activities, ensuring accountability mechanisms are in place to meet service standards, and developing strategies that lead to workplace improvements, and will work closely with the Ombudsman to provide effective, efficient and consistent leadership and governance for the office, based on a collaborative and positive culture.
- Provide strategic and operational leadership to the Complaints and Investigations functions across all categories of complaints. This requires efficient and effective business processes for receipt of a range of complaints under different legislative mandates, triage for appropriate treatment such as preliminary enquiry, monitoring, early resolution or investigation, and conduct of investigations into matters meeting the criteria for such action.
- Liaise and collaborate with key agencies including the Integrity Commission and other agencies to promote the benefits and effective management of public interest disclosures through policy development, research, training and improved practice.
- Drive effective budgeting, corporate and business planning, and program evaluation frameworks in collaboration with the Ombudsman and other senior staff to optimise effective, efficient and consistent application of the Office’s financial, human, intellectual and physical investments in delivering its mandated functions.
- Provide technical leadership for complaints management, investigation and Right to Information staff to ensure an exemplary standard of accuracy and quality, best practice services and outputs, integrity of process and the professional and technical growth of staff
- Exercise delegated authority as the Ombudsman’s delegate to conduct investigations, audits and reviews under relevant legislation and prepare decisions and directions.
- Allocate and manage resources consistent with the current and emerging workloads of the Office and within budget.
Essential Requirements
- Current Tasmanian Working with Vulnerable People Registration (Registration Status - Employment).
