Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery
The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is Tasmania’s leading institution for natural, cultural, and heritage collections, housing nearly one million items. It operates under the Department of State Growth and aims to connect communities with Tasmania’s unique story.
TMAG enriches, inspires and educates local and global communities by connecting them with Tasmania’s unique journey and place in the world.
Its 2025–28 Strategic Plan focuses on: research and collections, operational excellence, First Peoples engagement, and community outreach.
The First Peoples team in TMAG is based on the fundamental rights of Indigenous Peoples to self-determination. The First Peoples team aims to achieve a vibrant, living, culturally appropriate Indigenous art and cultural collection and exhibition program that integrates Tasmanian Aboriginal and other Indigenous perspectives across the TMAG and ensures culturally safe and appropriate access to the TMAG’s First Peoples Collections
Duties
1. Build and sustain culturally respectful relationships
Engage with Tasmanian Aboriginal communities, the TMAG Aboriginal Advisory Council, and national/international stakeholders.
2. Enhance collections access, knowledge-sharing and deliver community-led programs and engagement
Ensure culturally safe access to collections and integrate Indigenous knowledge into curatorial practices.
3. Lead communications and engagement strategy
Embed First Peoples voices in exhibitions, programs, and visitor experiences. Remove barriers and foster collaboration.
5. Advance cultural safety, inclusion and workforce development
Mentor First Peoples staff, promote a culturally safe workplace, and lead inclusive programming and management.
6. Provide strategic leadership and governance
Develop and implement First Peoples strategies, represent TMAG publicly, and attract support for Indigenous initiatives.
Essential Requirements
Evidence of the following must be provided prior to appointment, promotion or transfer to this role:
- The Head of the State Service has determined that this is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people identified position, and the person nominated for this position is to meet the Tasmanian Government’s eligibility requirements in accordance with Employment Direction No. 10 – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment in the State Service.

Desirable Requirements
- An awareness of First Peoples Collections in museums and/or art galleries.
- Some work outside of normal hours will be required.
- Some interstate travel involving overnight absences will be required.
- A current full car drivers’ licence
